Scientific Picnic with KhPI in Shcherbani!

On May 2, 2025, the Department of Electric Transport and Diesel Locomotive Engineering took part in a career‐guidance event in the village of Shcherbani, Poltava region. This large‐scale, open‐air orientation fair featured almost every study program of NTU “KhPI.” Together with colleagues from other KhPI departments, we showcased cutting‐edge research and technologies currently used worldwide across various industries.

Specifically, our department demonstrated—using physical and interactive models—how Maglev trains (magnetic levitation technology) operate, explained car-body tilt systems that increase average running speeds, and presented energy storage principles for on-demand power supply, among many other modern innovations. Attendees also learned the fundamentals of how electric locomotives and trains, diesel locomotives, and diesel multiple units function. We discussed the operation of individual components—traction generators, traction motors, diesel engines—and condition-monitoring technologies, such as detecting so-called “faulty” axlebox units running outside normal parameters.

Students from several schools and lyceums actively participated, asked many questions, and showed great enthusiasm. Our department hopes that some of these bright young minds will choose to pursue their higher education in Electric Transport and Diesel Locomotive Engineering at NTU “KhPI.” We look forward to welcoming you!
