Abstract:
Off gases such as off gas from the refinery or flaring associated gas from oil drilling sites can be utilized in Internal Combustion Engines and Gas turbine engines to generate electricity. At present, such gas is often just flaring in gas combustion devices that is harmful for human health, and is a contributor to the worldwide anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide. For example, oil refinery flare stacks may emit methane and other volatile organic compounds as well as sulfur dioxide and other sulfur compounds, which are known to exacerbate asthma and other respiratory problems.

Project Idea
Gas turbine engines can utilize off-gas of wide hydrocarbons composition. The main problem in utilization of off-gases in ICE is knocking (detonation). Next characteristics have a core influence on detonation of the engine: compression ratio, ignition timing, aftercooler temperature, power rating, methane number. The only independent parameter that affects the occurrence of detonation during operation of a gas engine is methane number which is a physical characteristic of the gas. Different theoretical and experimental methods of MN definition will be investigated during the project. For experimental investigations the scheme of gas blending system for determination of MN for different gases and its compositions should be developed. Computer controlled gas blending system and test procedure will be created. As result of project the problem of detonation when using off-gas in Internal Combustion Engines will be solved. New engineering solutions in development of power plants for utilization off gases will be offered.

Scientific novelty:
New effective methods for power generation when using off gases from refinery processes will be developed
