Course “Chemistry”

Chemistry is a fundamental natural science that studies the world around us, that is, matter and movement in their inseparable unity and has many-sided prospects in all directions of development of scientific and technological progress. Chemistry is intended to lay the foundation of a modern scientific outlook and engineering thinking among specialists of a wide profile. The most important technical achievements (space technology, nuclear power, microelectronics, computer technology, modern nanotechnology, and many others) are impossible without the use of new materials with special properties created by chemistry. Knowledge of chemistry is necessary for the fruitful creative activity of a modern specialist in many sectors: chemistry and chemical technology, biology, medicine, physics, instrument engineering and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, microelectronics, agriculture, construction, and others.

Chemistry is the science of substances, their properties, structure and transformations. Modern chemistry is one of the most extensive disciplines among all natural sciences. Traditionally, chemistry has evolved in two directions – as a fundamental and applied science. The applied aspect of this science is the solution of problems posed by various industries, medicine and pharmacy.

The study of the fundamentals of modern chemistry is necessary for the successful development of special disciplines such as: “Production technologies of inorganic and organic substances”, “General and technical ecology”, “Oil and gas production and processing”, “Nanotechnologies and nanomaterials” and many others. None of the modern industries can develop without chemical products and this dependence is constantly increasing. The chemical industry is significantly different from most other industries – it can create new, non-existent in nature, materials with desired properties: polymers, composites, medicines, and many others. This feature is widely used in the cosmetic, engineering, pharmaceutical industry, medicine. The chemical industry is one of the leading sectors of the economy of any country in the world. Chemical science plays an important role in the development of physics, biology, ecology, medicine, and pharmacy. The use of chemical methods by scientists allows scientists to study at the cellular and molecular levels the processes occurring in the human body. Energy development is also closely related to chemistry. For energy purposes, use the products of oil refining and gases. One of the significant scientific achievements of the twentieth century is the creation of nanotechnology and nanomaterials, the fundamental basis for which are physics, chemistry and molecular biology in conjunction with mathematics.

Relevance

To master modern chemical technologies, theoretical knowledge in chemistry and the ability to apply them to solve practical problems of special disciplines are necessary.

Goals

  1. Systematization and consolidation of knowledge in chemistry acquired by foreign students at home, filling school education gaps due to discrepancies in national and Ukrainian general education programs in chemistry.
  2. Formation of modern ideas about the scientific picture of the world, the deepening of knowledge in the field of those basic phenomena, concepts, laws and theories that students need in the study of chemistry at the university.
  3. Mastering the language of the subject (letter and graphic symbols, vocabulary, grammatical constructions) as a means of obtaining scientific information in an amount that ensures free perception and understanding of textbooks and lectures in universities.
  4. Creating a theoretical basis of chemical knowledge for the subsequent study of special disciplines.
  5. Disclosure of the role of chemistry in the development of technology, the creation of new materials and technologies, the rational use of natural resources and environmental protection.

For the organization of independent work of foreign students, it is recommended to use additional literature and teaching aids developed by teachers of the department of natural sciences, which contain theoretical course material and examples of solving basic typical tasks and practical material needed to complete the tasks.
