Specialty “boilers and reactors”

The department trains specialists in the specialty 7.090505 “boilers and reactors” in two specializations “Boilers” and “reactors and steam generators for nuclear power plants”.

Living in the present conditions is not possible without the use of steam and hot water – heat.
Produce thermal energy boilers , reactors and steam generators. It’s hard to find an area of human activity where they have not been applied . The generated power boilers or steam generators, steam drives the turbine thermal and nuclear power plants, ships and submarines. It is used in the extraction and processing of oil, coal and other minerals, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, the chemical industries, used in the manufacture of building materials, paper, food and medicines in hospitals, sport centers . In the communal services and in household as a heat energy generated by the boilers and steam generators. Design of boilers and steam generators, power, pressure, and temperature of the resulting vapor depend on the purpose and application. For example, power boilers designed for certain steam pressure and temperature by utilizing the heat of burning combustible material in the furnace (fuel). Purpose of power- boilers – heat- processed in the furnace required for further process products, using produce heat for thermal power generation. Appointment of utilizing boilers – to cool before release into the atmosphere of the waste gases at processing plants, while heating the water or getting couples. Purpose reactors and nuclear steam generators – obtaining a certain water vapor pressure and temperature due to the use of the heat produced by the fission chain reaction of heavy elements.

In boiler furnaces can burn: gas, oil, alcohol, specially trained fossil fuels (coal, pyrite, etc.), wood and garbage, animal waste and processed agricultural products. Boiler – complex engineering structures. For example, to generate 300 MW of power necessary for an hour in a boiler to 1000 tonnes pressure to 240 atmospheres (24 MPa) and temperature 550 °C. In the furnace of the boiler, the volume of 6000 m3 and a height of 41 m at a temperature above 1000 °C  burn 172 tons pulverized coal. From the boiler of such power is released in about a million cubic meters an hour combustion products, purified from 40 tons of ash and hazardous substances.

Nuclear reactors and steam generators are also the most complex and the main objects of nuclear power plants.

During the study future engineer acquires basic knowledge of thermodynamics, heat – and mass transfer, hydro – and aerodynamics, combustion theory, reactor physics, chemistry, water and fuel, technology, environmental protection, the basic theory of strength, measuring equipment, automatic control, mathematical modeling complex thermal processes.

By specialty 7.05020202 “Computer-integrated manufacturing processes and production” the department prepares specialists in the application of modern computer technology for automated process control operations, engineering, construction, and installation of various power plant equipment, heating systems, heating plants, metallurgical and machine-building plants, oil gas producing complex of factories in different fields. The integration of computer technology in the energy sector is not just a spirit of the times – this is the most promising direction for future development of all countries of the world. This, in turn, ensures graduates of this specialty prospective employment in many enterprises in Ukraine and abroad.

During his studies graduates acquire fundamental knowledge in the field of regulation, mathematical modeling of complex thermal processes.

Research department constantly being introduced into the educational process in the form of updated courses of lectures, laboratory work and practical training in all specialties. The results of research in the department make it possible to attract the most promising students to participate in creative research in the framework of NIRS with the continued use of these studies in the diploma projects.

Every year, on the basis of research scientists involved with the department reports an average of 4-6 international scientific conferences and seminars, which are active postgraduate students and students of different degrees of skill level – from bachelor’s to master’s degrees in exhibitions with displays and layouts experimental facilities established by the department. Scientists and students of the department constantly publish their findings in scientific and technical journals NTU “KPI”. Top students perform scientific work, which is on the national department of urban and competitions of student research papers, and have been repeatedly defeated, for example, in the category “Industrial development, technology and resources”.

Received basic training and specialization allow graduates to successfully exploit the different energy equipment to perform engineering design, installation and start-up operations, environmental and thermal and modal testing, and conduct certification and certification of this equipment in place for future work.
