Day of embroidery

The Department of Law of NTU “KhPI” congratulates everyone on Embroidery Day!

The Ukrainian National Costume Day is held annually on the third Thursday of May. It is celebrated not only in Ukraine, but all over the world – both among the Ukrainian diaspora and among foreigners. In 2025, the holiday falls on  May 15 .

Embroidery occupies a special place in Ukrainian culture . Experts believe that the Ukrainian people are trying to encode happiness, fate, life and will in the ornament of embroidery.
Nowadays, embroidery has become an everyday form of clothing, but it is worn on holidays or significant dates. The tradition of embroidering shirts with multi-colored threads and patterns has a centuries-old history. Girls mainly embroidered when preparing their dowries for a wedding. Patterns on embroidery were a decoration of clothing and carried a magical meaning.
Embroidery Day is a holiday designed to promote unity and cultural revival of the entire multinational Ukrainian people.
The idea to celebrate “Embroidery Day” arose in 2006. Then several students and teachers of Chernivtsi National University put on embroidery and organized a flash mob. And a few years later, “Embroidery Day” acquired international proportions. Today, the geography of the holiday covers more than 50 countries.
