Scientific school on the problems of nonlinear mechanics is recognized internationally. Founder of the school, well known scientist in the field of oscillation theory professor Babakov I.M. (1886-1974), was the first head of the our department.

From year 1924 a new direction, that gained development in department’s scientific school, was created by professor Burlakov A.V. (1921-1981). Annually researches funded by Ukrainian government and coordinated by Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine are conducted by nonlinear mechanics scientific school.
Scientific work of I.M. Babakov is focused on obtaining new research results and knowledges in the field of oscillation theory. He founded one of the biggest scientific schools of nonlinear mechanics in Ukraine that remains world famous.

One of the first gifted students of I.M. Babakov was A.S. Volmir(1919-1986) well known mechanics researcher. A new methods in analysis of nonlinear oscillations (bifurcation, stability, chaos), internal combustion engine transmission dynamics syntesis, reliability and long term strength of military and agricultural machines were created and presented in doctoral theses of prof. Shteinwolf L.I.(1965), prof. Karaban V.N.(1982), prof. Shatohin V.M.(2004), prof. Avramov K.V.(2005) and prof. Andreev Y.M.(2009).

New results and scientific knowlenge in the field of nonlinear mechanics, creep theories, theories of shells and long term strength theories were obtained in doctoral theses of prof. Breslavskii D.V.(2000), prof. Lavinskii V.I. (2003), prof. Salo V.A. (2003) and prof. Naumenko K.V.(Germany, 2006). Scientific research of the department during its 85-year history resulted in numerous publications, included in the encyclopedic list of Ukraine’s National Academy of Science, gained recognition in Ukraine, U.S.A., Great Britain, China, Germany and Russia, where they were published.
According to the results of the 2009 competition held by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine decided to award prizes for the best scientific work for assoc. D.V. Lavinsky, assoc. Yu.V. Romashov, scientific coworker V.M. Sobol.
In 2015 assoc. Yu.V. Romashov defended doctoral dissertation .
Oleg Konstantinovich Morachkovsky, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics of NTU “KhPI”, was awarded the 2019 State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology.
