Congratulations to Marko Andriiovych Mashchenko, a student of the Department of Ceramics, Refractories, Glass and Enamels Technology, group XT-123sv (Educational and Scientific Institute of Chemical Technologies and Engineering), and to the supervisor of the research, Professor Oksana Mykolaivna Borysenko, on their victory!
On April 25–26, 2024, the final stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Research Competition “Civil Safety under Martial Law” was held at the National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine. The research area of the competition was “Chemical Technologies, Radiation and Biological Protection, New Substances and Materials.” The student research papers presented at the competition focused on addressing civil safety challenges under martial law and included elements of scientific novelty and practical value.
As a result of the competition, the research paper by Marko Andriiovych Mashchenko titled “Foam Concrete – an Eco-Friendly Thermal Insulating Construction Material” was awarded the Third Degree Diploma.
The First All-Ukrainian Innovation Festival was held at our university, organized by the NTU “KhPI” Startup Center “SPARK” with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Startup Fund, NTU “KhPI” Science Park LLC, and the Ukrainian Association for Management Development and Business Education.
The competition brought together higher education students, scientific and academic staff of universities, as well as representatives of general education schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, and colleges across Ukraine. The key focus areas of the presented startups included developments for the defense-industrial complex, high-tech industries, energy, food security, environmental and cyber security, IT technologies, medical and agricultural engineering, as well as transport and logistics infrastructure.
The final stage of the competition took place on April 29, 2024, where the teams that passed the preliminary selection presented their innovative solutions and achievements. Among the finalists was a team of young scientists from our department, consisting of Stanislav Ligezin, Sviatoslav Ryabinin, Artem Zakharov, and student Danylo Hurovyi, under the supervision of Professor O.Yu. Fedorenko. The team presented their project “FireDefend”, aimed at developing an innovative intumescent fire-protective paint based on the synthesis of nanostructured materials, and demonstrated the results of its performance tests.
The use of the FireDefend carbon-ceramic fire-resistant coating helps prevent the rapid spread of open flames, localize the fire, and increase the time available for firefighting.
Congratulations to our team, whose startup won the “Sponsor’s Choice” award!

Following the results of the master’s thesis competition for NTU “KhPI” graduates in 2021, Mikytа Maistat, a student of our department (group ХТ-Н118в), won first place. Congratulations to Mikyta on this well-deserved victory and to his scientific advisor, Professor Yaroslav Mykolayovych Pitak, Head of the Department of Ceramics, Refractories, Glass, and Enamels Technology.
Even during his student years, Mikyta showed a strong interest in science. In 2020, he won a grant in the start-up competition held by CIG R&D LAB from Chernovetskyi Investment Group. After graduating from the university, Mikyta decided to continue his scientific work and is currently pursuing a PhD at the department, furthering his research. We wish Mikyta success in achieving his goals!

Alexey Shevtsov (pictured second from the right), a graduate of our department, was awarded a full scholarship from the Government of the People’s Republic of China in 2017 for a four-year doctoral program at Harbin Polytechnic University. This scholarship includes free tuition, accommodation, and a stipend. Today, Harbin Institute of Technology, founded in 1920, is a multidisciplinary university and research institute covering technical, natural, management, humanities, and legal sciences. It is a member of the C9 League (the nine elite universities in China) and is ranked among the top 10 engineering universities in the world according to the US News rankings. The faculty of our department always fondly remembers Alexey and takes a keen interest in his work.
Alexey’s message:
“Greetings to all the Polytech students! I would like to send my warm regards to the professors of my native department and to the researchers of the Laboratory of Functional Ceramics and Protective Composite Coatings. During my time studying in China (post-graduate student program), I have significantly improved my foreign language skills (Chinese and English). I have gained experience living and studying in another country and made new friends. Currently, I am studying Chinese at the preparatory faculty. The first semester was quite easy, with few classes, but all of them were conducted in Chinese (among 60 students, only three are foreigners). At first, I didn’t understand anything, and after classes, I had to translate and memorize the language. But now, the exams are behind me. I am now intensively continuing to study Chinese and taking additional lessons. Chinese is hard for me, but I can already communicate on elementary topics. And although it is not easy, it is very interesting!
My scientific supervisor, Y. J. Wang, works on the development of new ceramic and composite materials, particularly high-temperature mixtures with a metal matrix, ultra-high-temperature ceramics, and composites containing boron nitride. One of his research directions is the low-temperature preparation and heat treatment of composite materials. I aim to work on high-entropy oxide mixtures, and my supervisor supports me in this endeavor. I have the opportunity to work in laboratories equipped with the latest technology, which many scientists can only dream of. I have already participated in several international forums and congresses, which allows me to communicate with representatives of the global scientific community.
And all of this is thanks to the wonderful teachers I had and the education I received at the Department of Ceramics, Refractories, Glass, and Enamels Technology at NTU ‘KhPI.’ It is here that I received invaluable experience and knowledge, which have already proven to be useful. These were great student years that I will never forget!”
On June 24, 2020, the final of the second season of the educational and scholarship program CIG R&D LAB was held at NTU “KhPI.” Six student teams, selected from 33 applicants, presented their startup ideas to the expert committee. Following the project presentations, the jury selected two winning startups: an AI-powered chatbot psychologist “Elomia” and the “Space Ceramic” project (technology for producing elite building ceramics with decorative metal coatings). The “Space Ceramic” project directly involved students and faculty members from our department, including Prof. Lyudmyla Petrovna Shchukina. The winning teams will receive an investment of 250,000 UAH from CIG to further develop their startups. Congratulations to the winners and we wish them success in bringing their brilliant ideas to life!
Her work on the topic “Decorative Glass as an Element of Design in Construction” was carried out under the guidance of world-renowned scientist, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Lyudmyla Lazarivna Bragina. The research, presented in the “Design of Architectural Environment” section (specialization 191 Architecture and Urban Planning), took 3rd place, surpassing 15 competitors from various Ukrainian universities. This is another confirmation of the high-quality education provided by our department, with students demonstrating excellent results even beyond their primary specialty. Keep up the great work!!!
