About the department

History:

The Department of Ceramics, Refractories, Glass, and Enamel Technology at NTU “KhPI” will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026. Its origins date back to 1910, when academician Ye.I. Orlov initiated the training of specialists in silicate technologies. The department was officially established in 1926 under the leadership of prominent scientist, academician P.P. Budnikov, who laid the foundation for the scientific school of physical chemistry of silicates.

Throughout its history, the department has been headed by renowned scientists who made significant contributions to materials science and technology. Among them is academician A.S. Berezhnoi, who founded the subsolidus structure of phase diagrams for multicomponent silicate systems. Today, the department focuses on innovations in nanotechnologies, biomaterials, and energy/resource efficiency.

Mission:

To train highly qualified specialists in chemical technologies—particularly in ceramics, refractories, glass, and enamel—capable of creating innovative materials for modern industrial and technological needs. To provide students with fundamental knowledge, practical skills, and the opportunity to implement scientific ideas for the advancement of Ukrainian science and industry.

Vision:

To be a leader in the field of chemical technologies in Ukraine and beyond, contributing to the progress of materials science and engineering. We aim to develop scientific schools that define the future of innovative materials and to create an educational environment that inspires researchers and students to achieve new heights.

Core Values:

  • Innovation: Development of advanced materials for technical, construction, biomedical, and aerospace applications.

  • Professionalism: High-level education and practical training for work in cutting-edge industries.

  • Partnership: Collaboration with leading scientific institutions, industrial enterprises, and international organizations.

  • Eco-Friendliness: Focus on the development of energy- and resource-saving technologies and eco-friendly materials.

  • Improvement: Continuous development of educational programs in line with the demands of modern science and industry.

The department trains bachelors, masters, and PhD students in the specialty “Chemical Technologies and Engineering”. Faculty members actively publish research articles, monographs, and participate in international conferences. Graduates work at leading enterprises in Ukraine and abroad.
