History of the department

Kharkiv Technological Institute of EmperorAlexander III was founded in 1885.

Eltekov AP was appointed an adjunct professor at the Department of Chemistry, but due to his health condition th escientist soon resigned and lectures on chemistry were temporarily given by Honored Professor of the Imperial Kharkiv University NN Beketov. Rector of KhTI Kirpichov VL also invited to give lectures the famous chemist Ivan Mikhailovich Ponomarev (1848-1905), who studied with Vislicenus and Wurtz as a student and was the first to synthesize parabenic acid from urea and oxalic acid in 1872. Later IM Ponomarev became one of the founders of the chemistry of heterocycles. At the beginning of 1887 IM Ponomarev became the head of the Department of Chemistryof KhTI, gave lectures on inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry, actively equipped the chemical laboratory and continued research in the field of nitrogen-containing heterocycles.

Yuri V. Korshun (1873-1951) worked in the KhPI since 1936. He was one of the first chemists to attempt to systematically teach a course in organic chemistry based one lectronic theory (OrganicChemistryCourse, 1930). Refuting the views of Berkenheim AM, who adhered to the theory of the existence of only ionic bonds in molecules of organic compounds, Yu.V. Korshun wrote that: “this or that number of pairs of electrons that form this octet, is not in the exclusive possession of this atom, but is part of the electron shell and other atoms” Pre-revolutionary technical school did not train personnel for science, so organic chemistry was not a profiling subject in KhTI.

1906 – 1919

The first head of the Department of Organic Chemistry – Professor Osipov NP

Research: cis-, trans-isomers of fumaric and maleic acids and in the field of thermochemistry of organic compounds. The textbook “Introduction to the study of organic chemistry” was written by Professor Osipov in 1910. Osipov was a lecturer of the courses in organic and analytical chemistry, under his leadership at the department conducted syntheses of derivatives of a number of furan.

1919 – 1954

Doctor of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Honored Scientist, Professor Valyashko NA

Research work of the department under the guidance of prof. Valyashko NA was conducted in three directions: in the field of photochemistry; spectrographic studies of organic compounds in the ultraviolet region; synthesis and analysis of organic compounds. More than 200 derivatives of benzene, pyrazole, pyrazolone and other compounds have been studied. The spectrographic method of research was first used to study the structure of organic compounds and the nature of th ephysiological activity of organic compounds. According to research results, more than 90 scientific papers have been published. Many works are devoted to forensic medicine. Prof. Valyashko NA prepared 11 candidates of chemicals ciences. Students of N.A. Valyashko later headed the departments of KSU and KhChTI and continued his work. Because of the systematic and comprehensive study of UV spectra of organic compounds, the scientific school established by N.A. Valyashko is considered one of the best in the world.

1954 – 1977

Head of the Department, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Cheshko FF

Research work of the department in this period was conducted on the topic “Research of the theory of the structure of the benzene ring and intermolecular interactions.” There search was carried out using the methods of UV, IR spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, magneto-optical activity, refractoscopy, pH-metry, polarography, conductometry, nephelometry. Methods for calculating the properties of benzene, acenes and polyphenyl compounds have been developed. The results of scientific research are used for technological developments: effective selective phases for GL chromatography, catalysts for esterification reactions, emulsification methods, lubricating and cooling liquids (coolants) for processing metals and refractories. The results of scientific research have been published in 145 articles, 18 copyright certificates have been received. On the basis of research works 6 candidate dissertations were defended, 2 monographs were published.

Head of the Department, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Prezhdo VV

At this time, the department worked in two directions:

1) synthesis and study of the properties of practically important substances

2) intermolecular interactions and electrical properties of molecules

In 1979, an electro-optical laboratory was established, whose staff worked on the creation of devices and methods for the control of technological processes and non-destructive testing of surfaces based on the Kerr electro-optical effect. The amount of budget funding and economic contract reached 200 thousand rubles pur year. Created and implemented in the industry liquid chlorine analyzer (Pervomaisky Chemical Plant), electro-optical device to control dust emissions (Chimkent VO “Nitrogen”), electro-optical regulator of high-voltage oscillations (HPhTI), ellipsometric method of surface cleanliness control (Khotkovo, CDB).

Since 1992, Professor Prezhdo VV was on pedagogical work in Poland, continuing fruitful cooperation with scientists and teachers of KhPI, KSU, UKHIN. In 1997, the President of Poland presented him with the Act on conferring the title of “Professor of Chemistry”, and in 2000 the Minister of Education of Poland appointed Prof. Prezhdo VV for the highest professorship in Poland. According to the results of scientific and pedagogical work Prezhdo VV published more than 120 articles, received copyright certificates and patents, published 2 scientific monographs, environmental dictionary, 2 textbooks, made more than 100 reports at international conferences, prepared 11 candidates.
