GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Sociology and Public Administration has more than 50 years of history. In its modern form, it was created on the basis of the Department of Scientific Communism of KhPI in September 1992. The best traditions are preserved and passed on to young teachers by the veteran of the department – Professor N. M. Semke, who began working in the team in September 1974.

Today, the Department of Sociology and Public Administration is a powerful scientific and pedagogical team that successfully combines high pedagogical skills, its own latest methodological developments and the results of scientific research in its activities.

EDUCATIONAL AND METHODOLOGICAL WORK

The Department trains students in the professional field of “Sociology” at the educational and qualification level “bachelor” and the educational and scientific level “master”. Graduates of sociology are successfully employed and are in demand in the regional labor market.

In addition to training qualified specialists in the field of sociology, the leading task of the department is the sociological and political science education of future engineers of various specialties, specialists in management, economics and finance, and so on, both in full-time and part-time (distance) forms of study. It is solved by a highly qualified teaching staff, which includes five doctors of sciences and eight candidates of sciences.

From November 2014 to May 2020, the department was headed by Professor V.V. Burega.

From June 2020 to February 2021, the department was headed by Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor Yuriy Arkadiyovych Kalagin.

Since February 2021, the department has been headed by Doctor of Public Administration, Professor Volodymyr Mykhailovych Moroz.

Among the employees of the department are doctors of sociological sciences Goroshko Olena Igorivna, Biryukova Marina Vasylivna and doctors of public administration Kruglov Vitaliy Viktorovych and Tereshchenko Dina Akramivna.

The department employs highly qualified specialists in sociology and public administration, thanks to whose efforts the educational process is 100% provided with educational and methodological materials, which are constantly updated, methodological recommendations, and textbooks taking into account the latest achievements of sociological and political science. Such results are a natural consequence of the fruitful work carried out by the heads of subject-methodical commissions. The most active in this direction are Professor M. V. Biryukova, senior lecturers S.V. Grigor’eva, O. A. Kozlova. The publication of collectively prepared textbooks, educational and educational and methodological manuals for the basic training courses of the department is being prepared.

The department has developed and teaches almost 70 courses, including not only basic, but also author’s courses, which are taught using innovative approaches to the organization and implementation of the educational process, and most importantly to the content of academic disciplines.

In the everyday practice of pedagogical activity of the teaching staff of the department – the introduction of modern information technologies into the educational process, teaching individual academic disciplines in English.

SCIENTIFIC WORK

Scientific work is carried out within the framework of the departmental research topic “Development of Modern Ukrainian Society: Sociological and Political Dimensions”, which has state registration.

The staff of the department actively increases and realizes its scientific potential. Monographs, textbooks, educational and teaching-methodical manuals, professional articles on topical problems of sociology and political science are regularly published.

The research activities of the department are organically connected with the problems of sociology of public administration, the effectiveness of managerial influences on socio-economic processes in society, sociological support of marketing activities and advertising in organizations, the formation of civil society in Ukraine, the study of issues of development of the university environment, socio-political, public and professional self-determination of students, etc.

Every year, members of the department take an active part in organizing and holding scientific conferences, publish articles in scientific professional publications. It has practically become a regular international scientific and practical conference on the issues of the department’s research work “Development of Modern Ukrainian Society: Sociological and Political Science Dimensions”, which has state registration.

The most successful research projects of the department at the international and domestic levels are considered to be:

“Dynamics, sociocultural relationships and subjective conditions of the spread of illegal drugs among youth after World War II. A comparative study of development in Ukraine, Germany and Spain”. The project was funded by the INCO-Copernicus Foundation. The results of the study are presented in the collective monograph “Youth and Drugs”.

“Organizational and methodological aspects of drug addiction prevention among adolescents. Activities in Ukraine, Germany, Spain”. The results of the study are presented in the collective monograph “Drug addiction prevention: organizational and methodological aspects”.

“Intellectual modeling of information management of political mentality. Dynamics of relations of social strata of Ukraine to NATO”. Project funding from the Manfred Werner grant. The project report was posted on the NATO website (in English).

“Development of a quality policy at the university” under the TEMPUS program.

“Consumer behavior in the wine and low-alcohol beverages market”.

“Personnel motivation in modern Ukrainian theater (on the example of the Kharkiv Academic Theater of Musical Comedy)”.

Over the past ten years, the department’s staff has been participating in sociological support during the election campaigns for the President and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and local government bodies.

A significant scientific and pedagogical reserve of the department, its scientific and teaching future are gifted and talented young people, who annually replenish the ranks of the department’s postgraduate students. Mostly these are graduates of the department who have shown abilities for study and scientific work.

The department also includes a laboratory of applied sociology, which not only provides students with the opportunity to practically master the secrets of the profession, but also conducts specific research on topical topics with their direct participation.

Our students have an active life position, participate in various public and youth events at the city and regional levels. During the academic year, the department operates a student discussion club “Society and Politics”, the meetings of which are devoted to topical issues of public and political life.
