Department Formation
The Department of Engineering Electrophysics was officially established in 1968. Initially named the Department of High Voltage Engineering, the first student intake took place in September 1966. The idea of creating the department belonged to the distinguished scientist in high voltage engineering, head of the High Voltage Engineering and Current Converters Research Laboratory (HVE & CC RL), S.M. Fertik, who briefly served as the acting head.
Over the years, the department was led by his closest students:
- Prof. I.V. Bilyi (1968–1983)
- Prof. V.V. Konotop (1983–1996)
- Prof. V.M. Mykhailov (1996–2005)
- Prof. V.V. Rudakov (2005–2016)
From 2017 to September 2022, the department was headed by its graduate, Prof. O.L. Rezynkin, D.Sc.
Since October 2022, the department has been managed by its graduate, Ph.D. Serhii Mostovyi.

Training of Specialists
Throughout its history, the Department of Engineering Electrophysics has trained:
- 1,537 engineers
- 62 Ph.D. candidates
- 14 Doctors of Science
The first graduates in 1972 specialized in “Engineering Electrophysics.” Since 1984, the specialty has been called “High Voltage Engineering and Electrophysics.” From 1972 to the present, the department has trained 975 electrophysics engineers.
In 1999, the department introduced a program in “Non-traditional Energy Sources,” with the first graduates completing their studies in 2005. Since then, 232 specialists have been trained in this field.

Scientific Schools and Research Areas
Magnetic-Pulse Metal Processing
Since its inception, the department has conducted research in magnetic-pulse metal processing. This research area was led by Prof. I.V. Bilyi and Prof. L.T. Khymenko. Magnetic-pulse installations and devices of various types were developed, produced, and patented with 350 author’s certificates and 45 foreign patents from the USA, France, the UK, and Japan. Over 200 units were implemented in various domestic industries (aviation, rocketry, radio engineering, and mechanical engineering) and supplied to Bulgaria and Hungary. Several doctoral and Ph.D. dissertations were defended in this area, with Professors Bilyi and Khymenko receiving the State Prize from the Council of Ministers.
Impulse Electromagnetic Fields and Transient Processes in Electrophysical Installations
This research area lies at the intersection of strong electric and magnetic field technology, theoretical electrical engineering, mathematical physics, computational mathematics, and modern computer modeling technologies. The department addresses problems of modeling strong impulse electromagnetic fields, taking into account skin effects in transient modes, heating and deformation of conductors, and the impact on biological objects.
Generation of Powerful Nanosecond Electromagnetic Pulses
Research is conducted on improving high-voltage impulse generators based on Arkadiev-Marx circuits, Tesla transformers, and Fitch circuits for use in fundamental studies and advanced electrophysical technologies. Achievements include impulse currents of up to 2.5 MA and impulse voltages up to 10 MV for pulse durations of 10-100 ns.
