GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The V.O. Kravets Department of Information Systems was established in 1993, its founder was Valeriy Alekseevich Kravets, the then vice-rector of the university. The department trains specialists in the following specialties: 172 “Electronic Communications and Radio Engineering”; 122 “Computer Science”. In order to improve the quality of specialist training, the department created: in 1994 – the laboratory of “Machine Translation”; in 1998 – the laboratory of “Telecommunication Systems and Information Security”; since 2007, the CISCO Network Academy has been operating at the Department of Information Systems of NTU “KhPI”; in 2021, the Cybersecurity Academy was opened. The instructors of the academies were the then senior lecturers of the Department of Information Systems Natalia Dzhenyuk and Maksym Tolkachov.
In 2009, at that time the associate professor of the department, candidate of technical sciences Pavlo Pustovoitov became the laureate of the scholarship of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for young scientists. Since the same year, the department has been staffed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Igor Yakovenko – laureate of the V.E. Lashkarev Prize of the NAS of Ukraine.
The Department of Information Systems is a co-founder of the Educational, Scientific and Production Complex (UNVK), which unites more than 25 institutions working in the field of telecommunications, in particular, the State Enterprise of Special Communications, the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Research Institute of Communications”, the Precarpathian VPZ “Digital PBX Plant”, the Odessa National Academy of Communications named after O.S. Popov, etc.
The scientific work of the department is carried out jointly with the Center for New Information Technologies (CNIT), and Research and Design Institute “Molniya” within the framework of economic contract and budget research in the field of infocommunication technologies.
The Research Institute “Molniya” is the basic facility of the Department of “Information Systems”, where students acquire practical skills during laboratory and practical classes, as well as the preparation of course and diploma theses of students, dissertations of postgraduate students and doctoral candidates.
The staff of the department, together with the employees of CNIT (now the Information and Computing Center), participated in the creation of the university’s corporate computer network at NTU “KhPI”, which unites 22 educational buildings and 12 dormitories. Together with the Central Institute of Information Technology, a large amount of work was carried out to connect the corporate networks of Kharkiv universities with optical communication lines. The modern URAN system (scientific and educational computer network) in Kharkiv connects more than 20 leading educational and scientific institutions of Kharkiv with fiber-optic communication lines.
Together with the IOC, the department employees Pustovoitov P.E. and Udalov D.V. are developing the ACS “NP” – an automated educational process management system. Thus, in 2019, an electronic record book of a student of NTU “KhPI” was introduced, and in 2020 – an electronic office of a teacher of NTU “KhPI”.
The traditions of the scientific school of the department are worthily continued by its graduates. The American company of our talented graduate Vladislav Kitaynyk took 50th place in the ranking of the most dynamic businesses in the USA, and his second successful company Whales Ventures is a partner of the department in conducting case championships in wartime, which is of great importance as an “intellectual investment” in the future of Ukraine. A significant part of the companies’ earned funds is directed to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for which they were awarded an appropriate award for volunteer activity. The department fruitfully cooperates with companies both in conducting case championships and IEEE hackathons (Maxim Okhrimenko), and at the level of international expertise of IT projects, including the ultra-modern OpenAI Startup (Prof. Oleksandr Yushchenko).
The participation of the department’s teachers in international projects of the Erasmus+ program is a significant step towards integration into the European educational space:
- One of such projects is GameHub (2015–2018), which aimed to increase the employment rate of graduates, unemployed engineers, and ATO veterans by developing digital skills in the gaming industry.
- Another important project is dComFra (2018–2021): A framework of digital competencies for Ukrainian teachers and other citizens, aimed at harmonizing European initiatives on digital competencies with Ukrainian ones. realities.
- The current project DigiUni (2023–2027): Digital University – Open Ukrainian Initiative is focused on creating a highly effective digital educational ecosystem in Ukraine.
The department trains highly qualified specialists: Halyna Sokol and Vitaliy Voronets are working on their doctoral dissertations, and 10 postgraduate students of the department are preparing to defend their candidate dissertations.
