Department of
Physics of metals and semiconductors
The department deals with the solution of physical problems and practical application in the field of science-intensive technologies, systems, nanomaterials, creation of new devices, apparatus and equipment. Specialists are trained for the study of physical objects, physical processes and phenomena, the development of technological processes and the creation of new technologies, materials and substances. The strongest scientific team among Kharkiv universities, and the 5th among all Ukrainian ones according to the Google Scholar rating. 8 educational and research laboratories studying the leading branches of modern materials science. A fruitful combination of classical university education with high-quality applied technical experience.

Graduate specialties and trajectories
Specialty 105 “Applied physics and nanomaterials” — “Applied physics and nanomaterials for electronics, energy and medicine”
Directions of scientific activity
Complex studies of the structure and properties of nanosized bodies by X-ray, electron-optical methods. Study of formation mechanisms, structure and physical properties of thin films and compositions based on them, in particular new objects, such as fullerites, quasi-crystals, superlattices, nanocrystals. Identification of structural causes of non-planar magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic films and development of methods for its programming. Creation of magnetically soft film materials used for the production of magnetic heads and other electromagnetic devices. Development of film magnetoresistive sensor elements that will be used to detect and measure magnetic fields. Research of strong magnetic fields generated by highly anisotropic permanent magnets, as well as sensors based on nanostructured films with giant magnetoresistance (GMR) to measure these fields. Physics of thin films, phase and structural transformations in nanoscale film compositions. X-ray optics and microscopy. Thermal and radiation stability of x-ray optical elements and systems.
