History of the department

The Ukrainian language department traces its history since 1954. With the adoption of the Law “On Languages in the Ukrainian SSR” in 1989 and with Ukraine gaining independence, the department began to teach new courses: “Ukrainian Language” and “Business Ukrainian Language”. For many years, the department provided teaching of the disciplines “Introduction to Linguistics”, “Fundamentals of Applied Linguistics”, “Modern Ukrainian Literature” and “Computer Translation Systems” for students of social and humanitarian specialties. Today, scientific and pedagogical staff of the department teach Ukrainian students of various specialties in the disciplines “Ukrainian language (for professional purposes)” and “Business Ukrainian language and professional communication”, and for foreign students ˗ the disciplines “Language of professional training (Ukrainian)” and “Ukrainian as a foreign language”.

The teachers of the department are the authors of many scientific studies that were published in professional publications and publications that are included in international scientometric bases. Employees of the department are the authors of many scientific studies, including more than 10 dictionaries, more than 40 textbooks and training manuals, etc. For a long time, the department organized international scientific and practical conferences “Modern problems of lexicography”, “Language teaching methodology”, annual international lexicographic seminars. Also, every year the department organizes the work of the “Language training of a specialist” section of the International scientific-theoretical conference of students and postgraduates “Ukraine and the World”, conducts the 1st stage of student Olympiads and competitions on the Ukrainian language. The department carries out active international cooperation with advanced higher education institutions in Poland, Austria, France and other countries.

The department is headed by Candidate of Science, Associate Professor Svitlana Mykolaivna Cherniavska.

The main directions of scientific activity of the department:

– methodical: language teaching in technical institutions of higher education;

– historical: the history of the introduction of the Ukrainian language into education;

– terminologist: study of industry terminology systems;

– Literary: study of works of Ukrainian and foreign writers;

– lexicographic: studying and creating dictionaries of various types.
