Gamification in the training of future managers

Gamification, which is integrated into the educational process of the Department of Management of NTU “KPI”, shows high levels of student engagement and is an example of innovative active learning. The use of business games in teaching various subjects motivates our students, develops teamwork skills, models management decision-making processes, and introduces them to a multicultural environment.

As a result of gamification, students acquire certain special competencies and learning outcomes that correspond to the educational programs of the specialty 073 “Management”.

We present our training activities with gamification during the spring semester of 2022-2023.

 

Bachelor’s degree:

  1. “Fundamentals of International Marketing”, supervisor – Associate Professor O.Y. Sychova.

Objective of the business game: development of promotional activities for a restaurant

Characteristics of the business game: focus groups and brainstorming methods were used, and the results are presented in the form of presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint on the topic: “Development of advertising for a restaurant”.

  1. “Investments”, supervisor – Associate Professor Sitak I.L.

Objective of the business game: Analysis of the investment climate of Ukraine

Characteristics of the business game: The dynamics of Ukraine’s investment attractiveness index was analyzed, and problems affecting business in Ukraine were identified. The results were presented in the form of PowerPoint presentations on the topic “Building Ukraine – Investment Strategies”. An understanding of Ukrainian business opportunities for development, threats from the external environment, a list of interests of Ukrainian business in international activities, and the interest of foreign investors in investing in Ukraine were recorded on the Teams meeting board. A Kahoot business game on “Investing” was also held.

  1. “International Business”, supervisor – Associate Professor O.I. Chaikova.

Objective of the business game: To identify typical areas and positions of managers in international business.

Characteristics of the business game: During the semester, the national and global labor market for managers in international business was analyzed. Typical areas and positions of managers in international business were identified. Students investigated what changes should be expected in the future. They analyzed what competencies are required for each area and position. In addition, students reflected on their career aspirations and learned how to formulate a goal using SMART technology and build a goal tree. The results of the study were formalized in Microsoft Office 365 One Note and MiroBoard software. The results of the study were presented in small groups in the form of presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint and Canva on the topic: “Career opportunities for international business managers”.

  1. “Fundamentals of Management”, supervisor Prof. P.V. Brin 

Objective of the business game: developing the skills of correctly formulating needs, which is the beginning of the formation of the company’s mission.

Characteristics of the business game: The business game was built using the mechanics of the Dixit game. The game was attended not only by students but also by teachers who were invited as guests. The game consisted of 4 phases: presentation of information, presentation of students’ works, voting (guessing the coded enterprise), and presentation of voting results.

Master’s level:

  1. “Special course on modern problems of management”, supervisor Prof. O.S. Makovoz 

Objective of the business game: a lecture on the topic “Architectonics of Modern Management”.

Characteristics of the business game: An open lecture was held in the form of a presentation. The lecture was accompanied by a well-chosen variety of presentation material, which included information and photographic data on the subject matter, which allowed the lecturer to use storytelling techniques, characterization, explanation, commentary and maintain the students’ sustained attention throughout the lesson. In general, the lecture was conducted in an atmosphere of active interaction. During the discussion of the new material, the lecturer activated the students’ knowledge acquired in previous classes, as well as in other courses, and encouraged them to make logical arguments and comparisons, and to express their own opinions. The lecture participants turned to artificial intelligence (ChatGPT) to clarify current management issues and discussed the results.

  1. “Corporate Foresight in International Business”, supervisor: Associate Professor  N.V. Shyriaieva

Objective of the business game: Using brainstorming method, to determine which manager’s functions can be delegated to 4.0 technologies, namely ChatGPT

Characteristics of the business game: The business game was held on the Teams platform using Whiteboard app. As a result of the brainstorming and subsequent discussion, the following conclusion was made: technologies such as ChatGPT cannot be used for strategic planning but as an assistant to individual tasks of the departments. Also, a separate conclusion was made about 4.0 technologies: 4.0 technologies should be assistants used by specialists in training.

The experience of implementing international projects with European universities and engaging students in joint learning is also very interesting and useful.

  1. Educational program “International Business” (bachelor’s and master’s degrees), supervisor – Associate Professor Shyriaieva N.V. 

Objective of the business game: modeling of negotiations on a trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU

Characteristics of the business game: students of the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs “International Business” of NTU “KPI” together with students of the Rhein-Waal University of Applied Sciences (Germany) took part in the simulation game “Model the Trade Agreement Negotiations: Ukraine and EU”. At the beginning of the game, students played a game on the Kahoot platform called “Do we know the nations? Do we understand each other?”. As a result of the “negotiations,” a joint draft document was developed with points on which all participants in the negotiation process, namely, EU representatives, Ukrainian representatives, representatives of social groups and business, reached a certain agreement.

  1. “Fundamentals of Financial Reporting”, supervised by Assoc. Prof. O.V. Prokhorenko and senior lecturer M.D. Foshchiy 

Objective of the business game: Comparison of financial statements of Ukrainian and Spanish companies.

Characteristics of the business game: students of NTU “KPI” together with students of the University of San Pablo (Spain) took part in the joint project “Collaborative Online International Learning” (COIL). Within the framework of the courses “Fundamentals of Business Analysis” and “Business Diagnostics”, students learned to analyze financial statements, exchanged presentations and videos about selected domestic companies, took tests for mutual evaluation, communicated and shared their impressions!
