Online lecture “Regional Trade Agreements”

On November 21st, 2024, we invite students to participate in the online lectureRegional Trade Agreementsby Prof. Dr. Corinne Lohre from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, HSRW (Germany). This guest lecture is part of a joint DAAD project of NTU “KhPI” and HSRW. And anyone can join the lecture!

Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022, and the first accession conference took place in June 2024. The political motivations and the intended political effects of Ukraine’s EU accession have been comprehensively debated. But what about the economic side of such regional integration? Is this always economically beneficial for the participating countries? And what are the implications for the multilateral trade system (World Trade Organization – WTO)?

In order to shed some light on these questions, we will take a closer look at the economic effects of regional integration / regional trade agreements (RTAs) and consider, among other things, the following questions:

  • What are the characteristics of RTAs, and how relevant is this form of regional integration?
  • What are the welfare effects of such agreements?
  • What are the political-economic motivations/interests behind RTAs?
  • What is the World Trade Organization (WTO) policy regarding RTAs? And what are the potential effects of RTAs on the multilateral trade system? Does it support or undermine multilateral liberalization efforts?

We look forward to your participation!
