The history of development of service sector specialties in the National Technical University ‘Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute’ (NTU ‘KHPI’) starts from 2021.The feasibility of bachelor’s degree training with specialization in hotel and restaurant businessin NTU “KHPI” was determined by the needs of the regional and national labor market in highly qualified personnel, increasing demand among the main stakeholders – applicants and employers.

The expansion of training for tourism and hospitality professionalshas caused the separation of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality from the structure of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Economics, Management and International Business(2022). Since the founding of the Department and up to now the Head of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality is Doctor of Economics, Full Professor Nataliia Yakymenko-Tereshchenko. She is a well-known expert in Ukraine in the field of economics, author and co-author of monographs, textbooks, more than 200 scientific and educational works. As a scientific supervisor she has trained a number of PhD candidates.
Bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Recreation started in summer 2022. This took place with the assistance and cooperation of the regional municipal institution”Kharkiv Organizational and Methodological Center ofTourism” of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.
Currently, the Department of Tourism and Hospitality employs 6 academic staff(Full Prof. NataliiaYakymenko-Tereshchenko, Assoc. Prof. Tetiana Zhadan, Assoc. Prof. Кaterinа Kunitsa, Assoc. Prof. Oleksandr Nosyriev, Assoc. Prof. LarysaStrygul, Assoc. Prof. Tetiana Chaika). All academic staff members of the department have high professionalism, high publication activity (Scopus, Web of Science), improve their professional qualifications in cooperation with the business community and leading institutions in Ukraine and abroad.

Prof. Oleksandr Nosyriev is a member of the Scientific and Methodological Commission J3 Tourism and Recreation of the Higher Education Sector of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and also amember of the Expert Group on Economics, Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.PhD in Technical Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Кaterinа Kunitsa is an expert of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for scientific and scientific-technical expertise of objects of expertise in the field of scientific and scientific-technical activity.Full Prof. Nataliia Yakymenko-Tereshchenko, Assoc. The scientific school of NTU “KhPI” of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality is represented by the following directions:“Development of international tourism based on the experience economy“ (supervisor PhD in Geography OleksandrNosyriev, GR 0120U101654); “Improvement of the organizational and economic mechanism of functioning and development of institutions of hotel and restaurant business” (supervisor Doctor of Economics Nataliia Yakymenko-Tereshchenko, GR0120U100596), “Strategic priorities for the development of tourism business and hospitality industry in the context of social and economic transformations”(supervisor PhD in Geography Oleksandr Nosyriev, GR 0123U103238); “Organizational and economic mechanism of functioning of the hospitality and tourism sector in the context of the prospects for sustainable development of the Ukrainian economy” (supervisor PhD in Economics LarysaStrygul, GR 0123U103224).
The Department is the organizer of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Marketing and organizational mechanisms of post-war development of the Hospitality and Tourism Industry of Ukraine’, co-organizer of international and all-Ukrainian conferences on the problems of tourism business development, economics and entrepreneurship in the hotel and restaurant business. On the initiative of the department the All-Ukrainian competition of photo works and posters “Everything begins with tourism!” is held.
Full Prof. Nataliia Yakymenko-Tereshchenko, and Assoc. Prof. Larysa Strygul are members of the Specialized Academic Council for awarding the academic degree of Doctor of Science D 64.050.02 in the profile 08.00.04 “Economics and Management of Enterprises (by types of economic activity)”.
Practice-oriented educational process at the Department of Tourism and Hospitality is ensured by close cooperation with the business community of the industry (trainings, seminars, webinars, conferences, business forums): LLC ‘RIBAS HOTELS GROUP’, Tourist Company “Kiev Satellite”, PJSC “Hotel Kharkov”, LLC “Optima Hotel Management”, travel companies “Masters Red Sea”, “Tural C”, etc. Professional qualifications of education seekers are ensured by the Department’s cooperation with LLC “Professional Training School” (“Horeca School”). Practice-oriented learning activities of education seekers are supported by the developed laboratory facilities of the Department.
In the period 2022-2024, the academic team of the Department set up of:Educational and scientific laboratory “Modern technologies of restaurant production”; Laboratory “Technology of production and organization of restaurant services”; Training laboratory “Hotel Polytechnic”.
The Department of Tourism and Hospitality actively supports Start-up movement of NTU “KHPI”.In 2023-2024. Bachelors and masters students participated in the development of two startups; training on the basis of Startup center NTU «KPI» passed all academic employees of the department;the Hotel and Restaurant Business educational program includes an educational component that supports competencies related to the development of start-up projects in the hospitality and tourism industry.
The high scientific and professional potential of the department made it possible to begin training second-level (master’s) students in the specialty “Hotel and Restaurant Business” in 2023.
The year 2024 was marked by an important event in the life of the Department, namely, ccreditathe ation of educational programs “Hotel and Restaurant Business” (first, bachelor’s level of education) and “Hotel and Restaurant Business” (second, master’s level of education). Now the department is carrying out preparatory activities for the admission of foreign applicants to study.
The educational and scientific process of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality is provided with own educational, methodological and scientific developments of the department’s team. For 2022-2024, 2 monographs, and 5 textbooks were published.
The international activity of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality is constantly expanding its horizons: international agreements have been concluded and are in effect on the organization of the “International Internship (Practice) Program for Students, Their Training, and Employment” in Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, and Germany.Cooperation with WSHiU (Academy of Applied Sciences, located in Poznan, Poland) has been organized in terms of organizing and participating in multilateral student exchange programs with support of Polish, Ukrainian, European and other international programs; an agreement on scientific and educational mobility under the ERASMUS + KA1 projects is being implemented.
