The department was established in 2018 on the basis of the union of three departments of NTU "KhPI": political history (founded in the 1920s), ethics, aesthetics and cultural history (1977) and history of science and technology (2004) . The department was headed by Dr. Sciences, Prof. Sklyar Volodymyr Mykolayovych. Since 2023, the department has been headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Olena Evgenivna Tverytnykova.
The department teaches the social and humanitarian discipline "History and Culture of Ukraine", the professionally-oriented academic discipline "History of Science and Technology" for students of all specialties of NTU "KhPI", as well as the disciplines "Ethics of Business Relations", "Religious Studies", for individual students specialties, as well as author's courses "History of Education", "Digital History", "History of Tourism", etc. Teaching of disciplines is provided in Ukrainian and English.
There is a concept of educational work, the basis of which is humanization of the entire educational process. The knowledge acquired by students affects the education of highly qualified specialists and the formation of spiritually rich personalities.
Among the priority areas of the department's work are the improvement of the organization of the educational process, the methods and methodology of teaching disciplines in accordance with new normative documents, the preparation of educational programs in connection with changes in the curricula, methodological materials for distance learning, as well as the search for new effective forms of educational and educational work with students and cadets.
Auditory classes are held in the form of lectures, seminars, conferences, discussions, round tables, control interviews. A modular rating system for monitoring students' knowledge has been implemented. In extracurricular time, accompanied by a teacher, each academic group has the opportunity to visit the museum of the history of our university, the art, literary, and history museums, the Landau Center, the "Arsenal of Ideas", as well as other museums and exhibition halls of the city of Kharkiv.
One of the main areas of work with students is the organization and participation in interuniversity, regional and international scientific conferences. Among them are the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Information Technologies: Science, Technology, Technology, Education, Health" (MicroCAD), the International Conference of Students and Graduate Students "Ukraine and the World" and others.
The department operates student scientific circles "Historian" and "Cultural studies and local studies", which ensure the wide involvement of students of all specialties in historical, local studies and cultural studies, participation in the mentioned scientific conferences.
The department traditionally actively engages in research activities. The topic of scientific research is an integral part of the university's research in the field of social and humanitarian sciences. Cooperation agreements have been concluded with the H. M. Dobrov Institute of Scientific and Technical Potential Research and History of Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and other institutions. The teachers of the department actively cooperate with foreign colleagues and institutions. Among the scientific interests of the department's teachers are the history of science and technology, the history of higher education, the history of Ukrainian science and technology, electrical engineering, physics, radio engineering, electric transport (prof. O.E. Tverytnykova); Ukrainian studies, ethnology, history of science, ethnolinguistic processes in Ukraine in the 20th and early 21st centuries, history of higher education (prof. V.M. Sklyar); medical local history of Kharkiv, social history of medicine. (Prof. I.Yu. Robak); history of local social and political thought; theory of local history; methodology of teaching humanitarian disciplines, history of Ukrainian statehood (prof. L.P. Savchenko); history of mechanics and theory of oscillations, machine dynamics, vibration diagnostics, theory of oscillations (prof. A.O. Larin); cultural studies, ethnology, folkloristics, art history, historical and literary regional studies, literary studies (prof. M.M. Krasikov); methodology of historical science, digital history, instrumentalization of history, historical source studies, special historical disciplines, bonistics (assoc. prof. Ye.K. Shyshkina); history of higher technical education, history of materials science, history of Ukrainian science and technology (assistant professor M.V. Gutnyk); the history of the museum business, the memory of the Second World War in Ukraine, modern Ukrainian historiography, inter-ethnic relations (assoc. prof. I.V. Dvorkin); social history, oral history, trauma studies, women's history (assoc. prof.r S.S. Telukha), etc.
The department trains graduate students in specialty 032 - history and archeology. As of November 2023, 17 graduate students are undergoing training for the third (Doctor of Philosophy) level of higher education at the "History of Science and Ukrainian Studies" program (scientific supervision is provided by Prof. O.E. Tverytnykova).
