English abbreviation: ESL CSIC

Approved by the Academic Council of NTU “KhPI”, Protocol No. 7 dated June 26, 2025
Enacted by Rector’s Order No. 202 OD dated June 30, 2025

Purpose

To promote the development of education and research in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data processing, computer and mathematical modeling by providing access to modern high-performance computing resources for students, PhD candidates, researchers of NTU “KhPI”, and partner organizations.

Research objectives

  • Conducting fundamental and applied research in mathematical modeling, computational mechanics, signal and image processing, artificial intelligence, and computer vision that require significant computational resources.
  • Implementation and expert evaluation of research projects and grants, including international ones, requiring high-performance computing; participation in interdepartmental and interdisciplinary projects.
  • Development of open-source and proprietary software products for modeling and data analysis optimized for multicore and GPU architectures.
  • Ensuring the implementation of FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) in the storage, processing, and dissemination of scientific data and results.
  • Supporting research within the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0, particularly in digital manufacturing, digital twins, and sustainable engineering development.

Educational objectives

  • Integration of the Laboratory’s computing infrastructure into educational programs in specialties F1 “Applied Mathematics”, F3 “Computer Science”, and others through laboratory and practical classes in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and big data processing.
  • Support for dissertation and research projects that apply high-performance computing, machine learning, and computer modeling methods.
  • Organization of trainings, summer schools, hackathons, and seminars for students and early-career researchers to enhance their competencies in intelligent computing, digitalization practices, and industry in line with sustainable development strategies, including Industry 4.0/5.0 principles.

Innovation and applied objectives

  • Performing computational and analytical work and providing consulting services to industrial enterprises, startups, and R&D centers in computer modeling, neural networks, process optimization, and digital twin development.
  • Facilitating technology transfer and commercialization of research results through the development of software and hardware-software system prototypes.

Organizational and service objectives

  • Providing managed, secure, and efficient user access to computing resources through access regulations and GPU/CPU time reservation.
  • Maintaining and updating the software stack (CUDA, TensorFlow, PyTorch, MPI, OpenFOAM, ANSYS, etc.) required for educational and research tasks.
  • Supporting initiatives and projects focused on digital sustainability, decarbonization, and efficient resource use within sustainable development strategies.
  • Developing an internal knowledge base (code repositories, methodological guidelines, script examples) and disseminating best practices in HPC resource usage among staff and students.
  • Collecting statistics on computing resource usage, monitoring performance and energy consumption, and preparing periodic reports for the department and university management.
