🎓 Beware of language traps! Secrets of translation 🕵️‍♂️🔍

Did you know that a simple ‘gift’ can turn into ‘poison’ if you mix up languages? 🎁➡️🧪

These were the kinds of puzzles that 11th grade students at the Reshetylivka Lyceum solved in an open lesson taught by our department’s associate professor, Dina Gulieva.

The topic of the meeting — ‘The translator’s false friends: when Speak and Sprechen let us down’ — made future applicants take a fresh look at language learning!

What’s interesting? 🧐
🔹 Gift ≠ Gift: In English it’s a present, but in German it’s dangerous poison!
🔹 Chef ≠ Chef: Not every ‘chef’ cooks in the kitchen. In German, it means your boss or supervisor! 💼
🔹 Speak vs Sprechen: Why these ‘twins’ actually have different meanings and require different constructions.

💡 Top tips from Dina Oleksandrivna:
1️⃣Context is everything! 🧩
2️⃣Trust professional sources — glossaries, corpora. 📚
3️⃣Keep lists of tricky words! 📝

Thank you to the lyceum students for your awesome energy! We look forward to seeing you among the students of the ICS department! 🚀🎓
