“Studying for a degree in ‘Applied Linguistics’ has been a truly valuable and fascinating experience for me. During my studies, I gained not only theoretical knowledge of linguistics, but also practical skills in working with modern information technologies, text data analysis and programming.
Particularly valuable was the combination of humanities with technical disciplines, which allowed me to take a fresh look at the possibilities for applying language technologies in various fields — from IT to information analysis.
The ‘Applied Linguistics’ programme is both interesting and promising, as it combines various fields of knowledge and opens up wide opportunities for professional development.“

“My studies at the Department of Applied Linguistics gave me exactly what I was looking for: the perfect balance between a solid foundation in the humanities and modern IT technologies. The greatest strength of this programme is its entirely practical focus.
We didn’t just study language theory; we learnt to apply this knowledge in practice, particularly in the field of natural language processing (NLP). Thanks to the foundation I gained at the department, I was able to confidently move on to implementing my own projects — from writing Python code to developing complex dialogue systems and chatbots using tools such as Aiogram and the Rasa framework.
The department has an atmosphere that is very conducive to research and the creation of your own products. It is the ideal place for those who want to be at the intersection of classical philology and programming and create technologies capable of understanding human language. I recommend it to anyone looking for a modern, interesting and in-demand specialism!“

“When I was choosing a degree course after school, I wanted to find a field that combined languages and modern technology. That’s why I enrolled in applied linguistics. During my studies, I realised that this course not only provides a solid grounding in languages, but also an understanding of how language technologies and text data analysis work.
It was this foundation that helped me take my first steps in the field of artificial intelligence. I now work with language data and help improve AI systems that process texts in various languages.
Applied linguistics gave me a great start to my career and provided a foundation that allows me to develop within the technology sector.“

“In 2026, I completed my degree in Applied Linguistics, and I can now say with confidence that this was the right choice for me.
My choice of degree programme was largely shaped by a conversation with the then Head of Department, N.V. Sharonova. It was this conversation that inspired me to enrol in ‘Applied Linguistics’ and showed me just how versatile and promising this field is.
I was particularly intrigued by the fact that the course combines not only the study of foreign languages but also an introduction to programming languages and modern technologies. This balance of humanities and technical knowledge makes the programme unique and highly relevant in today’s world.
Over the years of my studies, I have become convinced that this choice was the right one. I am grateful to the department’s lecturers for their support, knowledge and inspiration, which they shared with us throughout our studies. It is thanks to them that my studies became not only a useful but also an interesting experience.
If you are looking for a degree programme where you can combine a love of languages with modern technologies, then ‘Applied Linguistics’ will be an excellent choice.“

“Ever since I was a child, I’ve dreamed of becoming a translator, as I’ve always been fascinated by foreign languages and the chance to communicate with people from different countries. When I enrolled on the ‘Applied and Computational Linguistics’ course, I expected to be studying mainly languages and translation. However, during my studies, I discovered a whole new world – the world of programming languages. It was through this programme that I realised how language, technology and logic come together. We studied the basics of programming, working with text data and creating various digital tools. Over time, programming began to interest me even more than I had expected, and that is why I have now dedicated my life to this field.
I would particularly like to mention the lecturers who played a significant role in my professional development. They not only imparted knowledge but also helped students to better understand their strengths and find their own path forward. Thanks to their support, I was able to develop not only professional skills but also important life qualities – responsibility, critical thinking and the ability to tackle complex tasks. That is why studying this subject became an important stage in my personal and professional growth.“

“It may surprise you, but I was inspired to enter the speciality of “Applied Linguistics” by books, and no, it was not scientific works or textbooks. It was Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” books. I could not imagine how someone could create a language, not just one, but about 5! I was so inspired that I started looking for a speciality that would give me knowledge of languages and an understanding of how they work. Then, my choice fell to the Department of ICS, and I have never regretted it. “Applied Linguistics” combined technical aspects and humanities, which helped me a lot in building a career in IT. Even though my speciality is not related to programming, I have an important base that has helped me many times in my work, especially when there is so much AI around, and you need to understand how it works. So, I am very grateful to the professors who shared their knowledge, supported us and kept us going despite the hard times. If you are looking for a place to combine a good thing with a good thing, namely learning foreign languages and programming languages, this is the place for you.”

“When I entered the ICS department at KhPI, my main criteria for choosing a speciality was studying and using foreign languages. From the name, “Applied Linguistics” fully met this requirement. However, I had no idea that this speciality would completely change the direction of my development twice!
In addition to learning two foreign languages, “Applied Linguistics” emphasizes programming. The push to learn how to write code was crucial in choosing my future profession. I would have never started programming without KhPI…
I fully understood why the speciality is called “Applied Linguistics” when we started studying Natural Language Processing (NLP). Being able to “teach” a computer to understand human speech contributed to my interest in scientific endeavours.
The most significant value of this significance lies in gaining fundamental knowledge in the many areas of applied linguistics, using which a student can figure out what they like and continue their professional development in that direction.”

“Thinking back to my undergraduate years, I am grateful to the ICS department. The teachers demonstrated incredible professionalism and dedication, imparting knowledge and valuable life lessons. They demonstrated by example various role models that I still have to deal with today. Each lecture was full of interesting discussions and discoveries, greatly enriching our knowledge and broadening our horizons.
I would especially like to mention my diploma supervisor, Nadia Babkova. Her support was indispensable at all stages. She not only helped with training advice but also significantly influenced my choice of professional path, supporting my interest in programming. Thanks to her mentorship, I could move forward confidently and achieve my goals.
I also remember our group with warmth. We became a circle of like-minded people where everyone could find support and understanding, at least in learning matters. Together, we overcame difficulties, rejoiced in successes and celebrated victories. These years will remain in my memory as some of the most significant years of my life.
Thank you to everyone who was part of this unforgettable journey!”
