The Department of Welding at the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” was founded in February 2010 at the initiative of the administration of our university and with the support of the outstanding scientist and organizer of science, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Director of the “Institute of Electric Welding” Academician Boris Evgenievich Paton. The creation of the department was due to the need for engineering personnel for leading enterprises in the region, in particular, JSC “Turboatom”, JSC “Electrozhmash”, PJSC “Kharkiv Tractor Plant”, SE “Plant named after V. O. Malyshev” and many others.

Currently, the Department of Welding is one of the most famous in Ukraine and abroad centers for engineering and scientific training of specialists in welding and related processes and technologies. During the existence of the department, its own scientific schools have been created for electric arc welding of composite materials, gas-thermal methods of applying strengthening and restorative coatings to machine and equipment parts, welding of special steels and alloys, research and development of innovative welding technologies have been conducted, and a highly qualified teaching staff has been selected.

The department has a postgraduate program, and scientific personnel are being trained. Thus, in 2023, dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy were defended by O. S. Garashchenko, I. V. Kasyanenko, and S. V. Artyomova.

In April 2024, a graduate of the Department of Welding (2020) P. A. Sytnikov defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ahead of schedule. Currently, he works as an assistant, combining teaching with scientific work and the duties of a person responsible for career guidance work.

The Department of Welding continues to implement the main tasks of training highly qualified specialists in the specialty 132 “Materials Science” Specialization: “Welding and Related Processes and Technologies”, capable of formulating, generalizing and solving scientific and practical problems in their professional activities in the design, production and operation of welded structures, operation and repair of welding equipment, development of new welding technologies and related processes and technologies. As of September 2024, the department employs two professors, Dr. of Technical Sciences; three associate professors, Candidate of Technical Sciences; one Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), head of the training laboratory and engineer.

The creation of the Department of Welding was initiated personally by Academician B.E. Paton.

• The department fruitfully works with the Institute of Metallurgical Problems named after I.M. Frantsevich of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Electric Welding named after E.O. Paton of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Single Crystals of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
• Over the past 2 years, the department’s employees have published 25 scientific articles, received two Patents of Ukraine, and participated in 14 international conferences and seminars. Scientific developments carried out by the department’s employees are implemented in power engineering at thermal power plants and nuclear power plants.
• The department trains specialists in the field of “WELDING”.
  After defending their bachelor’s thesis, students continue their studies to obtain the title of specialist or master.
