Three Stories – One Lesson | Baluch Sarmachar

DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND FINANCE 

The department was founded in 1992. It was called the Department of Business and Controlling then and taught economics courses to technical majors’ students.

The founder and its first chairman is Professor Mishchenko Volodymyr Akimovych, Doctor of Economic Sciences. He is also the director of the Ukrainian-French Center for Industrial Management, an academician of the International Academy of Science and Higher Education,  member of the New York Academy of Science, co-founder of New Management school.

In 1993 the Department of Business and Controlling at the Faculty of Economics offered Industrial Management major with minors in Financial Management and Foreign Economic Activity, as well as at the specialty Management of Foreign Economic Activity with minor in Financial Management.

First students enrolled in 1993 and completed their graduate program in 1998 majoring in Industrial Management.

At the same time the interdepartmental laboratory for international conjuncture research was established to ensure high quality of education.

The department led researches on New Management, which took into account the holistic development of young specialists.

Ukrainian-French Center for Industrial Management (Professor Volodymyr Mishchenko), “Perspectives” Center (Associate Professor  Olena Reshetnyak, PhD, senior lecturer Iryna Glushchenko, assistants Victoria Nesterova and Anastasiya Makarenko), American-Ukrainian Business Center (Associate Professor Taras Danko, PhD, senior lecturer Andrii Ivakhnenko) implemented joint projects with leading educational institutions of Europe and the US to apply foreign experience in teaching. 

In 2004 the department started the preparation of specialists in the field of knowledge 0305 “Economy and Entrepreneurship” in the direction of training 6.03050801 “Finance and Credit” in the educational-qualification level “Bachelor”, “Specialist”, “Master”.

The department changed names several times:

  • In 2005 the department was renamed to the Department of Finance, Controlling and Foreign Economic Activity (order No.408-I on 04.08.2005).
  • In 2009 – to Finance and Taxation Department (Order No. 532-I on 10.11.2009).
  • In 2011 – to Finance Department (order No. 213-I on 04.05.2011).
  • In September 2014 – to the Department of Management of Foreign Economic Activity and Finance;
  • In November 2018 – to the Department of International Business and Finance.

Today we are one of the major departments of IESEMIB. The department offers Management and Administration undergraduate and graduate programs with majors in Management and Finance, Banking and Insurance.

There are 3 full professors (doctors of science), 6 professors and 17 associate professors and candidates of economic science among our teaching staff. An average age of the faculty is 47 years.

The faculty established partnerships with the businesses of the East of Ukraine: Kharkiv Tractor Plant, JSC “Avtramat”, “Turboatom” research and production association, as well as with the financial department of the municipality, banks, insurance companies.

The faculty regularly participates in training programs at the leading enterprises and universities of Ukraine, as well as does research internships at Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg (OVGU), Germany, at University of Szczecin (Poland). Our teaching staff continuously improves their foreign language to get even better at teaching foreign students. Almost all faculty members speak one or two foreign languages, some of them speak three foreign languages, most of them have been trained abroad.

Over 1200 students graduated from our department, 180 of them received diplomas with honors. Our faculty continuously improves course study material and applies up-to-date information technologies in International Logistics, Modern Problems and Methods of Mathematical and Computer Modelling, International Business courses.  Gamification is widely used in International Project Management, Securities, Banking System, Financial Services, Goods Market Infrastructure, International Marketing, Business Valuation courses. Business cases and simulations are used in Financial Management, Financial Analysis, Finance courses.

Our teaching staff develops and offers distance learning courses on Moodle.

Our students can use up-to-date computers to master information technologies to be used in their professional life, and department’s electronic library, which contains the latest learning material by NTU “KhPI” and other universities.

Our students are required to work on projects and to make presentations that enhance their creativity, are motivated to publish their research outputs. Multimedia is widely used in teaching. They published more than 700 articles and presented their theses at academic and student conferences.

The department has published over 60 textbooks and study manuals approved by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and NTU “KhPI”. Our professors Natalia Vlasova, Yurii Lerner, Volodymyr Mischenko, Raisa Dolinska, Iryna Fedorenko, Tetiana Pyatak are leaders in the quantity of publications.

Main focus of our research are capacity building, structural reorganization and development of domestic enterprises. Starting from 2020, the following are the main areas of research at our department:

  • Management of Industrial Enterprises Financial Performance (applied research)
  • International Business Management (the Fourth Industrial Revolution);
  • research of Production Capacity Strategic Management of on the Basis of Controlling.

Our faculty published 45 monographs. 20+ PhD theses and 3 postdoctoral theses have been defended by our faculty.

      

The department has wide partnership network consisting of leading universities of Germany, USA, Austria, Belgium and other countries. Our best students have an opportunity to study there, to master a foreign language, to get second diploma, and to get a postgraduate degree. In 2018 University of Sannio (Italy) became a new partner of the Department of International Business and Finance. Not only Ukrainian, but also foreign students studying at IESEMIB enjoy taking part in all joint activities with the Italian university.

In March 2020 Doctor of Economic Science, Professor Iryna Fedorenko became the chairwoman of the department.     

Our competitive advantage is continuous capacity building of the department teaching and administrative staff that helps to reach all kinds of education objectives at implementation of higher education programs. Another advantage is application of contemporary learning approaches and study material developed in partnerships with European universities, and use of advanced educational technologies based on innovative mechanisms of interaction between government, business and community.
