Summer School of Antiquity

From July 21 to 27, 2025, Volodymyr Kramskyi, a postgraduate student of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Cultural Studies, and History of Science, participated in and also co-organized the Summer School of Classical Studies, which was held in a blended format: both online and offline in the city of Odesa.

The school’s program featured a rich schedule of lectures and seminars which, in addition to the history of antiquity itself, also addressed many related fields of research, including the historiography of the Ancient World, the history of ideas, the history of philosophy, as well as issues related to the translation and publication of ancient texts for the modern Ukrainian reader.

Traditionally, an essential part of the school’s program consisted of sessions on the reception of Antiquity in literature, cinema, and even video games. Thanks to Volodymyr’s efforts, the conference managed to engage one of the leading contemporary experts in the study of historical reception in modern culture — Jeremiah McCall, author of such books as Swords and Cinema: Hollywood vs the Reality of Ancient Warfare and Gaming the Past: Using Video Games to Teach Secondary History.

Overall, the program was aimed at fostering interdisciplinary dialogue among representatives of various fields, which was further supported by the cultural program, including excursions to the town of Ovidiopol in the Odesa region, a tour of the city of Odesa and its Archaeological Museum, a board game themed around Antiquity, and the screening of a series dubbed in Latin.
