NTU “KhPI” OPEN DAY: THE DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRIC TRANSPORT AND DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING SHOWS HOW THE MODERN RAILWAY IS CREATED

May 23 – the start of your future in engineering

On May 23, the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” opened its doors to hundreds of applicants, parents, and everyone dreaming of becoming an engineer. For the first time since the beginning of the invasion, the event was held in a combined format – both offline and online. Within the framework of the event “Your Confident Admission,” the largest number of visitors gathered at locations where real equipment, live control systems, and modern software were demonstrated.

Particular interest was attracted by the STEM zone of electrical engineering and transport, including the Department of Electric Transport and Diesel Locomotive Engineering (ETT).

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: traditions spanning more than 130 years

Our department is one of the oldest in Ukraine (founded in 1892). But we look only forward. Today we train specialists who:

  • design modern locomotives, trams, metro systems, and traction substations;
  • work with digital twins of railways;
  • program traffic control systems.

WHAT DID THE VISITORS SEE?

ENTRY CERTIFICATE TO PARO. Yes, we issued special certificates to participants. It was a symbolic “ticket” to our engineering community.

Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy, Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics (ESI EEE). This is where we educate future electrical engineers in specialty G3 – Electrical Engineering (141 – Electric Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electromechanics).

A software station, monitors with color displays, tools (keyboard, mouse), and PC operation instructions. Our guests controlled a virtual locomotive model in real time. Using the model, they observed the principle of magnetic levitation and compared it on the monitor screen with a real high-speed train operating in Japan.

Department of Programming and Intelligent Technologies, where together we develop the following areas:

  • computer literacy for the engineer of the future;
  • digital electronic economy in transport;
  • machine learning in locomotive diagnostics;
  • mathematical modeling and traffic optimization;
  • software design for railway business management.

We do not simply teach repair – we teach how to predict failures 1,000 km before they occur.

SPEECH BY ACTING RECTOR YEVHEN SOKOL

The official opening was conducted by Yevhen Sokol, Acting Rector of NTU “KhPI.” He emphasized:

“Today, KhPI is a safe university where we train a new generation of engineers. Our graduates are expected at Ukrzaliznytsia, in urban electric transport, and in international companies. Join us – your country needs you.”

He also thanked the lecturers who, despite all challenges, continue providing high-quality technical education.

WHAT YOU DID NOT SEE IN THE PHOTOS (but should know)

  • Meetings with graduates already working on mainline locomotives.
  • Presentation of the new educational laboratory “Smart Traction Drive.”
  • Live communication with students – they spoke about internships at factories, traineeships in the EU, and graduate salaries (starting from UAH 30,000).

OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS (TOP-2)

G3 (141) – Electrical Engineering (Electromechanics (Electric Transport))

Career opportunities: traction substations, electric trains, metro systems, trams, trolleybuses.

J7 (273) – Railway Transport

Career opportunities: locomotives, trains, logistics centers, customs services.

KEY QUOTE OF THE DAY

Head of the ETT Department, Professor Borys Liubarskyi:

“We teach not only how to operate a train. We teach how to see the entire electrical network of the country as a single organism. Most importantly, we teach advanced technologies that represent the future. Join us – we will teach you to think like a chief engineer.”
