THE ETT DEPARTMENT ON THE MOVE: SHOWING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THE FUTURE OF RAILWAYS

(A STEAM Event at Vysokyi Lyceum No. 2: Technology, Electromechanics, and Hands-On Experiments)

On May 26, 2026, the Department of Electric Transport and Diesel Locomotive Engineering of NTU “KhPI” embarked on an exciting outreach mission to Vysokyi Lyceum No. 2 in the settlement of Vysokyi, Kharkiv District. Together with other institutes of the university, we organized a STEAM event for senior students from three lyceums of the Pokotylivka community.

The format was far from an ordinary lecture—it was all about live interaction in the school’s sports hall. Each institute was provided with tables to showcase its most interesting projects and activities. The ETT Department made the most of this opportunity!

Our exhibition table featured everything needed to spark interest in railway engineering:

  1. Micro-models of electric drives – a visual demonstration of how chemical energy is converted into the motion of a wheelset.
  2. Posters and locomotive component models – allowing students to explore the structure of a real diesel locomotive.
  3. Interactive quiz – “Guess the Train Component,” with sweet prizes for the winners.
  4. Train-driving simulator – students could use a laptop-based simulation to accelerate a virtual train to 60 km/h while obeying railway signal indications.

WHAT STUDENTS ASKED US

“Do you teach people how to drive trains?”

“How much does a locomotive driver earn after graduating from university?”

“Can girls study in this field?”

Our answers:

✅ Yes, we teach train operation—and much more than that. Students learn to work with complete traction and transport systems.

✅ Starting salaries for graduates can exceed UAH 30,000 at the beginning of their careers.

✅ Absolutely! We are happy to welcome female students. Several of our current students are already completing internships on mainline locomotives.

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS

The STEAM event was highly dynamic and engaging. Students enthusiastically visited every exhibition table: some tried soldering, others assembled electrical circuits, while many enjoyed operating our train simulator.

The format of “a few tables—many activities” proved to be very effective. Our faculty members had the opportunity to speak with numerous senior students from all three lyceums of the community.

We would like to express our special gratitude to Vysokyi Lyceum No. 2 for its hospitality, comfortable facilities, and technical support.

CONCLUSIONS AND INVITATION

Dear high school students of the Pokotylivka community!

If you enjoyed operating the train simulator, exploring engine models, and identifying railway components, then engineering may already be in your blood. We look forward to welcoming you to NTU “KhPI” and the Department of Electric Transport and Diesel Locomotive Engineering.
