Policy for the use of
artificial intelligence tools
General provisions
Educational and Scientific Institute of Computer Modeling, Applied Physics and Mathematics of NTU “KhPI” recognizes the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, in particular generative models, in modern education, science and engineering activities.
This policy defines the principles and rules for the use of AI by learners at all levels of higher education:
- first (bachelor),
- second (masters),
- third (educational and scientific).
The use of AI must comply with the principles of academic integrity, scientific ethics, reliability of results and the requirements of the internal system for ensuring the quality of education of NTU “KhPI”, as well as the recommendations of the National Agency for Quality Assurance of Higher Education.
Restrictions and prohibitions
It is prohibited within the educational process:
- use AI tools as a full replacement for independent performance of educational, course, qualification or scientific works;
- submit AI-generated results as your own;
- provide statements about results and conclusions without proper analysis, verification and refinement;
- use AI to fabricate or falsify data, research results, calculations, software code or sources;
- generate non-existent links or experimental results;
- violate confidentiality, in particular, transfer personal data, materials with limited access or research results to AI services without the permission of the authors/singers;
- to use AI during control activities (exams, testing, defenses, etc.), if this is not provided for by the conditions of their conduct.
Acceptable forms of use of AI
The tools of generative artificial intelligence can be used as an aid in educational and scientific activities for:
- checking grammar, spelling and stylistics of texts;
- translation of educational and scientific materials with subsequent editing;
- controlled generalization and stylistic preparation of the text;
- search, analysis and systematization of open sources of information with a mandatory check of the correctness of links;
- controlled assistance when writing software code, analyzing algorithms and debugging code;
- of controlled image or signal processing tools indicating the fact of using an AI tool. At the same time, the use of generative AI for the direct creation of images should be limited, and the use of AI for the creation of visual information design (for example, diagrams, schemes, etc.) should be strictly controlled by a person and have a mandatory mention of the tool for their creation.
Important: AI-generated results cannot be considered final without critical evaluation, verification and interpretation by the learner.
Transparency and disclosure of the use of AI
The use of artificial intelligence tools should be transparent. In the case of their use during preparation:
- educational works (abstracts, coursework, laboratory),
- qualification theses (bachelor’s, master’s),
- scientific publications and dissertations,
the applicant is obliged to indicate this in the text of the work (in the introduction, notes or a separate section “Statement on the use of AI”).
Recommended wording:
“The artificial intelligence tool(s) [name, version] was used in the preparation of this work for the purpose of [specify purpose]. The obtained results were checked, edited and interpreted by the author. The author bears full responsibility for the content and authenticity of the work.”
In case of non-use of AI:
“Artificial intelligence tools were not used in the preparation of this work.”
Responsibility and adherence to academic integrity
Students are fully responsible for:
- the reliability of the results of educational and scientific activities;
- compliance with the principles of academic integrity;
- correct use of sources and avoidance of plagiarism.
Violation of this policy (including undeclared or improper use of AI) is considered a breach of academic integrity and may result in:
- lowering or canceling the assessment;
- rejection of work;
- inadmissibility to the defense of a qualification work or dissertation;
- application of disciplinary measures in accordance with the internal normative documents of NTU “KhPI”.
Final provisions
The Institute supports the responsible, ethical and justified use of modern digital technologies, including generative artificial intelligence technologies, as a tool for improving the quality of education and scientific research.
The use of AI should contribute to the development of critical thinking, professional competences and independence of education seekers, and not replace their activities.
