The first admission of foreign citizens to the university occurred in 1946. The first students at KhPI were from Bulgaria and Korea. Since then, students from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America have been studying at KhPI.
Until 1996, the dean’s office for work with foreign students and the preparatory faculty were responsible for organizing training for foreign citizens at KhPI. In 1996, the Center for the Training of Foreign Citizens (CTFC) was established to organize and coordinate all work related to the university’s foreign students.
In 2009, in connection with the expansion of tasks and areas of work, the Faculty of International Education was established, comprising the Center for Preparatory Education, the Preparatory Department, and the Department of Pre-University Training of Foreign Citizens.
On January 1, 2022, the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Education was established from the faculty.
Areas of activity of the institute:

- organization of admission of foreign students to NTU “KhPI” for all forms of education;
- organization of work on the registration of foreign students in Ukraine;
- organization and control of training of bachelors and masters among foreign citizens in educational and scientific institutes of NTU “KhPI” in licensed specialties;
- cooperation with firms-agents from other countries on the organization of remote admission of foreign students to NTU “KhPI”;
- teaching in Ukrainian to foreign students and mastering the rules of the business Ukrainian language by domestic students;
- learning a foreign language (English, German, French) by foreign and domestic students;
- implementation of educational programs with leading universities in Europe through an educational center.
Since 2004, training for foreign citizens at NTU “KhPI” has been conducted not only in Ukrainian but also in English in certain specialties and educational programs.
