The Department of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Ecology (formerly the Department of Mechanical Equipment of Chemical Industries) was organized on October 18, 1946, as part of the Faculty of Inorganic Substances Technology of the Kharkiv Chemical Technology Institute.
Since the organization of the department, scientific work has been actively carried out:
– in the 1950s, under the leadership of I. N. Mukhin, developments in the hydrogenation of lignite were successfully carried out (Olexandria, Ukraine).
In the 1960s and 1970s, several scientific directions emerged:
– development of recommendations on the rational use of gas and gas condensate of the Shebelinsky deposit and the technology of obtaining high-octane gasoline (I. N. Mukhin, E. V. Kovalskyi, V. L. Nazarenko, A. S. Gurzhi). This technology is used to produce gasoline at the Shebelinsky gas processing plant even now.
– research and design of plate heat-exchangers (L. L. Tovazhnyansky, A. R. Yastrebenetsky, V. A. Tsybulnyk). One of the structures developed jointly with UkrNDIKhimmash and Uralkhimmash was awarded a gold medal at the international exhibition-fair in Leipzig in 1976. For the first time in the world, such heat exchangers were implemented in ammonia synthesis columns;
– intensification of large-tonnage grinding processes (V. Ya. Kozlov, R. P. Sobolev, N. S. Shchepylov, A. V. Ryzhov, A. N. Ivanov, A. A. Zmarada). The new design of the armor linings of the pipe mills developed by the creative team made it possible to significantly increase the productivity of the machines. The results of the work were implemented at a number of cement enterprises, which made it possible to obtain a significant economic effect;
– development of the theoretical foundations and technology for the synthesis of methyl alcohol by direct oxidation of natural gas, as well as the technology for obtaining methanol from the waste synthesis gas of acetylene production (V. I. Atroshchenko, M. A. Havrya, V. A. Slabun).
The obtained data were used in the design of the first domestic high-performance units for the synthesis of methanol, one of which was built in Ukraine (the city of Severodonetsk) and is in operation to this day.
According to the results of research conducted in the 1960s and 1970s, 8 candidate theses were defended at the department.
In the following years, the teaching and scientific staff of the department was significantly updated, but the traditions were preserved.
In 1985, the department was headed by Prof. G. A. Tkach – Honored Inventor of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Technical Sciences. From 1999 to 2021, the department was headed by V.P. Shaporev.
The staff of the department always believed that education without science and research processes does not meet the requirements of modernity.
Therefore, the main concept of student education at the department has always been and remains — the unification of educational and scientific research processes. The department organizes an educational laboratory with stands for filtering, heat exchange, refrigerating equipment, a stand for stress research in elements of chemical equipment. Laboratory stands are provided with methodical materials and computers. Classrooms are equipped with modern technical teaching aids.
Over time, the laboratory of machines and devices is replenished with new stands for the study of FGN and OGSh centrifuges, and cartridge filters.
You can see more details about the developments and scientific directions of the department’s work on the “Developments” page
Branches of the department. In order to realize the idea of integrating science and education, the department created the Interregional Educational Complex of Elite Education (IEC “ELED”), which includes, in addition to the Kharkiv State Polytechnic University, Academic Gymnasium # 45, a number of schools and technical colleges of the city, as well as leading enterprises of chemical engineering. IEC “ELED” implements the concept of continuous pre-university, university, and post-university education. Students have the opportunity to receive an engineering and humanities education, study a chosen technical specialty, and at the same time, if desired, acquire an economic profession. At the same time, full-time and extramural forms of education are combined.
During the period of master’s training, future specialists can take the candidate’s minimum exams.
Students are trained according to individual plans.
On the basis of branches, students use modern equipment and computers to perform laboratory work, diploma design, as well as master’s research works. Branches of the department are also bases for industrial practice.
After the opening of the specialties “Ecology and environmental protection” and “Equipment of processing and food industries”, two more branches were opened and agreements were concluded with research organizations on creative cooperation. A branch was opened at Nova Bavaria Brewery LLC, Kharkiv Experimental and Repair Plant (KHERMZ). Contracts were concluded with the enterprise “Slobozhanskyi Mylovar”, “Ekoton” NVF, “Ecopolymer” group of companies, “Fitopharm” LLC (Artemivsk), Research Institute of Forestry and Agromelioration named after Vysotsky, “Blyskavka”. In addition, the research and technical complex “Prodmashtech” was created on the basis of the department, and the department is intensively developing the laboratory base at the scientific-technological and educational center of NTU “KhPI”.
The material bases of the branches and the above-mentioned enterprises have unique equipment, modern computers, which allow to combine scientific achievements with the educational process, to perform physical and mathematical modeling of chemical processes and equipment.
Currently, from 2021, the head of the department is Ph.D., Assoc. prof. O.V. Shestopalov, who is a graduate of our department. The department of KhTPE conducts extensive cooperation with research institutes and industrial enterprises. Employees of the department take an active part in international projects and interstate scientific research.
Currently, the department has created a powerful material and technical base: branches of the department have been opened at enterprises of the city and region. The work of the department allowed to open new specialties, and now the department prepares engineers in 2 specialties:
133 – Industrial engineering
133.05 – Food, processing, and chemical industry equipment
101 – Ecology
101 – Engineering ecology
Methodical, reference, and special literature are widely produced. Students undergo industrial and pre-diploma practice at industrial enterprises in Ukraine and at scientific research institutes. The staff of the department went through a rather difficult path, trained more than 4,000 specialists for the national economy of Ukraine in various forms of education, performed dozens of contractual and budgetary works, prepared hundreds of names of methodical developments, and published about 35 textbooks and monographs. Employees of the department have about 300 copyright certificates and patents in Ukraine, and more than 1,000 articles have been published in professional publications.
Students actively participate in scientific developments. Annually, the department carries out 10-12 experimental and about 40 real diploma projects. More than 80% of graduates are employed under individual contracts with enterprises or under contracts for targeted training.
The postgraduate program of the department prepares specialists in the following specialties:
161 – Chemical technology, and engineering
101 – Ecology.
Thus, over the years of its formation and work, the department of KhTPE has turned into a single educational, scientific and industrial complex, and has firmly taken a leading place among related departments of Ukraine.
