On 29 November, NTU ‘KhPI’ hosted the most unusual event of the year: ‘Dead meme detector: translation edition’! 🤯 We proved that Applied Linguistics is not only about code, but also about a deep understanding of contemporary culture and humour.
What happened?
🧠Debriefing: We explored how memes influence culture and why artificial intelligence often ‘crashes’ when translating them. After all, humour 2.0 is about context, not literal words.
🎭 Discussion: ‘If I were a meme character’: It was a real performance! Participants tried on the roles of meme characters and discussed how their linguistic portrait helps the meme ‘live’.
🎲 Logic game: We played an interactive game where we had to recognise the hidden meanings behind jokes.
Linguists from KPI know that in order to teach AI to translate, you first need to teach it to laugh and understand culture! 😂
