Representatives of the SEMIT Department held a live broadcast for applicants to help them identify the differences between 121 “Software Engineering” and 122 “Computer Science”. The event was attended by more than 30 participants from Kharkiv, Kyiv, Zakarpattia, and Mykolaiv regions.
The 12 specialties of the industry have certain similarities between them, and it can be quite difficult for applicants who do not yet have experience in IT to prioritize and choose an educational program that will meet their professional goals. To facilitate their choice, representatives of the department of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute told about the differences between the specialties 121 “Software Engineering” and 122 “Computer Sciences”.
The event was attended by Andriy Kopp, associate professor of the SEMIT Department, guarantor of the bachelor’s degree program in Computer Sciences and Intelligent Systems, Vladyslav Kovtun, director of the company “CIPHER IT LLC”, and Kateryna Yakovleva, a Master’s Degree student of the Department.
The main difference between 121 and 122 is the focus of the two.
Software Engineering is a field of computer science that focuses on the industrial development of complex software systems using engineering principles.
Computer Sciences is a field that studies methods and technologies for creating computer systems, theory and practice of programming and algorithms.
Can a graduate of specialty 122 work as a Software Developer? Yes, if they make an effort to master popular programming languages during the course of study. Won’t the career choice of a graduate with a 121 degree be rather narrow? No, thanks to the knowledge of development, they can choose any direction – from testing to Business Analysis.
The curricula of the educational programs of the Department are designed to provide students with the maximum knowledge necessary for employment in the IT industry. Despite some differences in the programs, project-based learning at the Innovation Campus and strong foreign language training make our students and graduates demanded in the labor market.
