A new stage in the department’s educational activities began in 1995, when it became a graduate department. Recruitment and training in the specialty “Ecology”, specialization “Environmental Technologies and Equipment” began. This required a great deal of creative effort from the staff in preparing many new special courses, such as “Engineering Ecology” and “Utilization, Disposal and Disposal of Solid Waste” (professor O. Dreval), “Calculations and Design of Wastewater Treatment Systems” and “Fundamentals of Eco-Business” (professor V. V. Berezutskyi), “Resource Science and Resource Conservation” (associate professor O. O. Kuzmenko), “Calculations and Design of Dust and Gas Collector Systems” (professor V. F. Raiko), “Educational Research Work of Students” (Professor V. V. Horbenko), “Geochemistry” (professor M. Latysheva), “Experimental Research Methods” and “Theory of Technical Systems” (senior lecturer V. Lyapun), “Fundamentals of Biology and Microbiology” (professor L. Vaskovets), “Biochemistry” (associate professor T. Horbach), “Calculation of Dust and Gas Capture Systems” (professor T. Horbach). Gorbach), “Calculation and Design of Protection Systems against Energy Pollutants” (associate professor L. Chunikhina, senior lecturer N. Ustinova), “Earth Science with Elements of Geophysics and Certification” (senior lecturer T. Pavlenko), “Environmental Management in Mechanical Engineering” (associate professor N. Movmyga).
Graduates have always remembered with special warmth doctor of medicine T. V. Gorbach, who worked at the department part-time. She devoted a lot of her time to the students and created a research group that conducted various scientific experiments with mice, earthworms, etc. For 8 years, the results of the scientific group’s work were used to prepare reports for the annual student conference on applied ecology “Kharkiv Region, Students and Ecology,” which has been recognized as a city interuniversity conference since 2000.
Our environmental students have been among the best performers at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Technology, and they have repeatedly won institutional and national competitions and contests. In 2002, the department was awarded a diploma from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine for the active social work of our environmental students and for winning the All-Ukrainian competition “To Clean Sources – 2002” (second place).
Unfortunately, due to changes in the types of specialties in the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the department was able to make only three graduations of highly qualified specialists and, by the decision of the rectorate, stopped training them.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the department continues to demonstrate success in organizational, scientific, educational and other activities.
The department is replenished with new employees. At this time, the department was joined by сandidate of biological sciences L. Vaskovets, E. Yascheritsyn, N. Yevtushenko, candidate of technical sciences I. Gurenko, O. Maksymenko, E. Semenov, N. Tverdokhlebova, V. Parkhomenko, O. Tolstousova, candidate of technical sciences O. Pyatak and others.
In 2001, for the first time in Ukraine, the Union of Life Safety Specialists was established at the Council of Rectors of the Kharkiv University Center, and the head of the department, V. Berezutskyi, was elected as its chairman.
The Union of Occupational Safety and Health Professionals was a voluntary association of teachers, researchers, engineers, managers and employees of institutions of various levels of subordination who worked in the fields related to life safety.
As part of the Union’s work, the department annually organized regional scientific and methodological conferences “Safety of Life”, which since 2004 have grown into interregional and, eventually, international conferences “Human Security in Modern Conditions”.
The Union of Occupational Safety and Health Professionals worked under the guidance of the Union’s Coordination Council until 2017.
