Science and Mentorship Synergy: Inside Our International Master’s Defense

On October 14, another international student successfully defended his thesis. The event unfolded within a welcoming environment, featuring a productive scientific discussion. MIT-M124di.e group student Yang Guiping presented his master’s qualification research titled: “Synergistic development technology of ecological service function enhancement of coniferous forests”.

The master’s research focuses on developing a comprehensive approach for enhancing coniferous forest ecological functions within Guangxi Province, China. This topic choice directly reflects our graduate’s professional background, as he works as a forestry specialist driving sustainable forest development across China.

The research examines primary forest ecosystem services, specifically including climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, soil and water resource protection, alongside carbon dioxide sequestration. Furthermore, the author analyzes regional natural-climatic conditions, commercial forestry practices, and major environmental degradation drivers. Experimental studies evaluate how selective coniferous stand thinning combined with broadleaf tree planting influences overall plant survival rates, growth dynamics, and resilience against adverse natural conditions.

The study also investigated medicinal plant cultivation possibilities beneath the coniferous forest canopy across various altitudinal gradients. Furthermore, the author evaluated soil moisture variations, organic matter content, and understory species diversity under different forest management approaches. These findings inspired proposing a multi-tiered forest ecosystem management model integrating coniferous trees, broadleaf species, and medicinal plants.
Marking a significant teaching career milestone, Senior Lecturer A.S. Bosiuk supervised an international student’s qualification project for the very first time. Despite natural initial anxieties, Aliona Sergiivna performed excellently. State Examination Commission members highlighted our master’s exceptional defense procedure preparation alongside a high-quality presentation—achievements impossible without active supervisor involvement.
