Graduates of the Department of Occupational and Environment Safety of NTU “KhPI” will be able to successfully work in Ukraine in primary positions of occupational safety specialists at industrial enterprises of all forms of ownership, in state inspection bodies and occupational safety departments, territorial scientific and practical centers, in scientific and research institutions and other institutions.

What tasks do Occupational Health and Safety specialists solve?
At an industrial enterprise, the occupational health and safety engineer is responsible for:
– control compliance with safe and harmless working conditions at the enterprise, taking measures in this direction;
– control over the implementation of orders of state supervisory bodies, analysis and implementation of proposals of authorized labor collectives and trade unions on labor protection issues;
– control compliance with current legislation, rules and regulations on labor protection, industrial sanitation, and fire safety;
– control over the provision of established benefits and compensations for occupational safety to employees;
– participation in the development and implementation of safer and more advanced structures, protective equipment and other means of individual and collective protection;
– participation in the development of long-term and annual plans for improving working conditions, development and approval of the occupational health and safety management system at the enterprise;
– control over the preparation of estimates, the implementation of the specified measures and the spending of appropriations for these measures;
– participation in the investigation and analysis of the causes of industrial injuries and occupational diseases, as well as in the development of measures to prevent and eliminate them;
– monitoring the condition and use of individual and collective protective equipment, providing production areas with posters and safety signs, and employee training and instruction programs;
– organization of lectures, film screenings and excursions, equipment of offices and stands on occupational safety;
– conducting introductory briefings for workers and occupational health and safety specialists;
– liaising with medical institutions, research institutes and other organizations on occupational safety and health issues and taking measures to implement their recommendations;
– coordination of the activities of structural units on occupational safety issues and ensuring the preparation of occupational safety reporting;
– coordination of regulatory acts, rules and instructions taking into account international acts and documents adopted in Ukraine, etc.
This shows how complex and responsible the role of the occupational safety service at the enterprise is, how multifaceted the activities of an occupational safety engineer are.
In order to meet modern requirements, an occupational health and safety engineer must have versatile knowledge and be competent to successfully compete in the labor market. He must be well acquainted with the technology of a specific production, ergonomics, industrial sanitation and hygiene, and the arrangement and principle of operation of equipment, devices, and safety equipment. He must be well-versed in the multitude of regulatory documents, which are constantly being revised, changed, and supplemented these days.
An occupational safety engineer must be able to practically solve problems related to creating healthy and safe working conditions, have sociability, erudition, strong-willed character, and the ability to consistently defend their beliefs at any level. An occupational safety engineer constantly has to deal with physical and moral suffering and social injustice. He should be a psychologist, a peacemaker, and an educator. Such knowledge and development of these qualities can only be achieved through high-quality basic education, as well as through systematic self-education and self-improvement. Therefore, it is very good that in the 21st century, basic training of such specialists has begun in our country.
