Participation in international projects, grants, and startup activities
A startup, or startup company, is a newly created organization that builds its business on the foundation of innovation or advanced technologies. Such companies are often in the early stages of development, may not yet be officially registered, but intend to become full-fledged market participants. They have either not yet entered the market or have only just begun the process, usually operating with limited resources. Such organizations are often referred to as “garage” companies.
The innovations on which startups are based can be global or local in nature. In the first case, they are innovative for the whole world, and in the second, they are unique only to a particular country, even if they are already considered standard in other regions.
The startup opens up unique opportunities for transforming scientific developments into profitable projects. Participation in the startup competition gives faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates the opportunity not only to have their ideas evaluated in terms of investment attractiveness, but also to identify the weaknesses of their projects, hear constructive criticism, and take it into account for future improvement.
Chernovetskyi Investment Group (CIG) — one of the largest investment companies in the CIS market—was founded in 2013 and has an investment portfolio exceeding $100 million.
CIG R&D LAB is an educational and scholarship program of Chernovetskyi Investment Group aimed at motivating students, graduate students, and young researchers at higher education institutions to conduct research, develop skills in commercializing ideas, and create mechanisms for implementing innovative projects.
Unlike typical venture capital funds on the market, whose primary performance metric is the number of investments, CIG focuses on the quality of each investment. CIG invests its own money, not someone else’s, and only when it is fully confident in a project’s potential.
The CIG R&D Lab project is being implemented under a memorandum of understanding between NTU “KhPI” and CIG, which was signed in August 2018.
The goal of the collaboration between NTU “KhPI” and CIG is to create a mechanism to motivate students, graduate students, and young researchers at the university to engage in scientific and innovative research, acquire skills in commercializing ideas and developments, and develop mechanisms for implementing innovative projects.
The memorandum stipulates that the Chernovetskyi Investment Group will fund a scholarship and mentoring program for inventors and researchers at NTU “KhPI” who are selected by the screening committee. In turn, NTU “KhPI” will ensure the administrative and methodological implementation of the project at the university; prepare the necessary documentation for CIG to disburse scholarships to participants; and report on the progress of participants’ projects. Following this, a final selection will be made among the participants. The winner will receive investment to develop their project.
