New forms of learning through the introduction of computer technology also required attention. The first authors of distance learning courses were department head V. V. Berezutsky and L. A. Vaskovets (course “Fundamentals of Ecology,” 2006, educational environment “Web Class KhPI”). Later, distance learning courses were developed in the Moodle educational environment.

In order to improve the quality of distance learning courses at NTU “KhPI”, a system of methodological expertise was introduced. The authors of the following courses received certificates at our department:
– for 1st and 2nd year bachelor’s students majoring in 263 “Civil Security,” educational program “Occupational Safety”:
1. Introduction to the Major (prof. V. Berezutsky);
2. Fundamentals of Ecology (assoc. prof. G. Pancheva);
3. Fundamentals of Engineering Training (assoc. prof. N. Yevtushenko);
4. Human Physiology (prof. L. Vaskovets);
5. Risk Theory (prof. V. Berezutsky)
6. Safety of Buildings and Structures (prof. O. Dreval)
– Distance learning courses “Civil Protection” (assoc. prof. N. Tverdokhlebova) and “Life Safety” (assoc. prof. T. Bondarenko, assoc. prof. V. Gorbenko) were created for students of all specialties.

Associate professor N. Tverdokhlebova was responsible for distance learning courses. She underwent special training as part of the FPC on the course “Use of Information technology in distance learning.”

At present, in accordance with the order of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute,” the educational process is conducted remotely. Classes are conducted using Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams) in accordance with the approved curricula and schedule of the educational process. Teachers also use additional distance learning tools to provide students with access to learning materials (OneDrive, Class Notebook, Forms, SharePoint, etc.).
Department website created – http://web.kpi.kharkov.ua/safetyofliving/uk/golovna/. Since 2005, associate professor Ye. O. Semenov has been responsible for maintaining the department’s website, its design, and its content.

Today, one of the most important tasks of the department is to conduct an annual admission campaign. The department’s teachers actively participate in career guidance events in schools and technical colleges in Kharkiv, Kharkiv region, and Ukraine. Associate professor Ye. Yashcheritsyn is responsible for career guidance work.

To improve career guidance work at the department over a period of three years, starting in 2016, Associate Professor N. E. Tverdokhlebova developed and conducted the “All-Ukrainian Student Internet Olympiad in Civil Security” and a distance learning course “Civil Security for Applicants.”
The All-Ukrainian Internet Olympiad for schoolchildren in the field of “Civil Security” aimed to form a subjective understanding among schoolchildren of the sources of real dangers in modern society and to involve them in finding ways to overcome existing dangers and preserve public health. The course “Civil Safety for Applicants” introduced participants to the specialty and allowed them to gain practical skills in safe daily behavior and actions in emergency situations, teaching them how to provide first aid to victims in various types of emergencies.

For many years, in order to attract applicants, the department, together with the Ministry of Science and Education of Ukraine, held a competition called “Safety through the Eyes of Children,” in which nearly 100 high school students from various schools in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region participated annually. The competition committee reviewed the entries in accordance with the competition rules, taking into account age and relevant fields. The winners of the competition and their teachers were awarded certificates.

In 2022-2024, associate professor I. Mezentseva held an educational and entertaining Kahoot quiz for Ukrainian schoolchildren two or three times a year on a wide variety of topics related to the department’s activities. Several dozen participants from different parts of Ukraine competed in the quizzes. Associate professors O. Ilyinska, O. Kuzmenko, and other faculty members of the department took an active part in preparing the presentations.

Teaching assistants have always been a reliable support in conducting classes, helping teachers to organize the educational process and providing technical support for classes. Engineers from the department, under the guidance of the laboratory manager, prepared classrooms and laboratory equipment for classes, monitored students’ compliance with internal work regulations and safety rules, maintained the working capacity of instruments and computer equipment, provided students with teaching materials, prepared class schedules, kept records, etc.
During the department’s existence, many people have joined us as teaching and support staff. Some are difficult to remember, while others will be remembered forever. L. G. Zelinska (ecology and occupational safety) and V. O. Myagkyi (civil protection) worked at the department for many years as laboratory managers, while engineers V. O. Razlom, M. A. Kulakov, senior laboratory assistant N. G. Cherkashina, and engineer R. M. Antonovich and senior laboratory assistant O. M. Tankova have been working there for almost 30 years now. Engineers S. Korchomkina, G. Shakhov, L. I. Chekh, E. O. Lapteva, Yu. E. Pavlova, S. V. Avramenko, I. I. Chumak, N. Nizhnik, V. K. Sheina, L. P. Kryachko, O. Yu. Nakonechna, N. V. Ilyinska, A. M. Korneychuk, Yu. P. Kurylo, I. S. Shpak, O. V. Shandula, and many others.

The policy pursued by the department contributed to the continuous career growth of its employees. For example, I. Mezentseva joined the department as an engineer, then entered graduate school, worked as an assistant, and became a senior lecturer. Today, I. Mezentseva is a candidate of technical sciences, associate professor, leading lecturer of the department, deputy head of the department, expert of the editorial and publishing council of NTU “KhPI” in the specialty 263 “Civil Security,” an expert of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance in the specialty 263 “Civil Security,” and the guarantor of the educational program “Occupational health and Safety” of the second (master’s) level of higher education in the specialty 263 “Civil Security.”
O. A. Muzykina also started as an engineer. Now she is the head of the laboratory and also teaches ecology classes. O. Osmanova also joined the department as an engineer and currently holds the position of assistant.
I would also like to mention O. Ilyinskaya, who joined the department as an engineer, then worked as the head of the occupational safety and ecology laboratories, and after defending her doctoral dissertation, she first became a senior lecturer and then an associate professor. Today, O. I. Ilyinska is the secretary of the Academic Council of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Transport and the executive secretary of the annual International Scientific and Practical Conference “Human Safety in Modern Conditions.”

The department staff are well known at the university. Particular mention should be made of associate professor A. Y. Fomin, who served as deputy chair of the university staff trade union committee from 1986 to 1990 and has been its chair since 1990. The successes of the trade union organization of NTU “KhPI” and O. Y. Fomin’s contribution to its achievements have been recognized with a number of awards. These include the “Trade Union Distinction” medal, certificates from the regional and central committees of the trade union of education and science workers, as well as the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine. For 10 years, A. Y. Fomin was a member of the presidium of the regional trade union committee, and since 2005 he has been a member of the Central Committee of the Trade Union of Education and Science Workers of Ukraine.
