On October 27, 2026, with the support of the UKIN Department, a presentation of the “Industrial Utopia” web resource—created by the Central State Scientific and Technical Archive of Ukraine with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation—took place for first-year students at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Transport of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (NTU “KhPI”). The project was presented by Anastasia Medvedeva, a senior archivist in the Department of Document Information Utilization at the Central State Scientific and Technical Archive of Ukraine.
The presentation focused primarily on the history of the Kharkiv Nuclear Thermal Power Plant (KNP) project, its technical and architectural solutions, the background to its development, the course of preparatory work, and the reasons for the suspension of construction following the Chernobyl nuclear accident.
Students were shown the capabilities of the web resource, which combines archival documents, a 3D model of the planned complex, historical explanations, and multimedia materials. Particular attention was paid to the 3D model, which allows users to form a spatial understanding of the architecture of the future plant and the relative layout of its structures. The presentation demonstrated how digital visualization complements archival drawings, diagrams, and technical documentation, helping to understand the unrealized engineering vision. Materials on the current state of the site were also presented, along with a documentary film and Mykola Solomianyi’s painting “Industrial Utopia” as forms of artistic interpretation of KHATEC’s history.
The report emphasizes the importance of the website as a digital tool for preserving and promoting archival heritage, making historical and technical documents more accessible to a wide audience and demonstrating the capabilities of modern technologies in presenting unrealized industrial projects.
