“THE LAST MASKANS IN KHARKIV”: NOSTALGIA FOR THE AUTHENTIC
Ethnographic Museum “Slobozhansky Treasures” named after G. Khotkevych NTU “KhPI” in September 2012 announced a new city local history competition of student art research – “The last mazanki Kharkiv”. The first to respond to it were the students of KhPI, to whom the course of the history of Ukrainian culture was taught by the director of this museum, associate professor Mykhailo Mykhailovych Krasykov. The purpose of the competition, as seen by the organizer, who is also the director of the Kharkiv branch of the Ukrainian Ethnological Center of the Institute of Art History, Folklore and Ethnology. M. Rylsky National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine – to record the remains of samples of traditional architecture within the modern metropolis. It was necessary to take photos or drawings, measurements and learn about the history of the house. In May 2013, the results of the competition were summed up, as a result of which exhibitions were organized at the Kharkiv Art Museum, Parkhomovsky Art Museum. PF Lunev, Actor’s House. O. Serdyuk. And later the exhibition will travel to various institutions of Kharkiv – visit the Faculty of Architecture of Kharkiv National University of Construction and Architecture, the Central Scientific Library of KhNU. VN Karazin, the Regional Library for Children and Youth and other educational and cultural institutions. The idea of the competition, according to Mikhail Krasikov, did not arise by accident. In 2011, his scientific editorial office published a huge volume (600 pages) of works by Stefan Andriyovych Taranushenko “Scientific Heritage. Kharkiv period. Studies of 1918–1932 ”, where for the first time monographs and articles by a prominent art critic were republished from single copies, including the explorations“ House on Yelisavetinsky Avenue under Part 35 in Kharkiv ”(1921) and“ Old Kharkiv House ”(1922) – with excellent photographs and drawings. Unfortunately, none of these houses has survived to the present day. And in 2008 the museum held a local lore competition among the students of KhPI “The city we are losing” – about the fate of houses abandoned at random; in the following years 4 city competitions of art and research works “Kharkiv courtyards” took place. Thus, the desire to preserve for posterity the visual image of the old Ukrainian city, which has not yet completely disappeared, at least in Ivanivka, Novoselivka, Kholodna Hora, Lysa Hora and some other former suburban settlements, and sparked the contest “Last Mazanki Kharkiv”. Of course, most of these houses are unpresentable and not so old, but they were built on the same building principles as the beauties immortalized by I. Repin, S. Vasylkivsky, P. Levchenko and other prominent artists, and some of them simply striking harmony of proportions. The exhibition was attended by students of NTU “KhPI” (FT Faculty), Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, Kharkiv Art School, Academy of Culture, students of Art School. I. Yu. Repin, as well as experienced artists L. Zolotarev, O. Shekhovtsov, G. Kavtaradze, A. and G. Khmil, H. Dumbur, Y. Chornukha, S. Radionov, architect D. Vitchenko, journalist I. Mozheiko etc. The exposition gives a visual image of old, pre-industrial Kharkiv, clearly depicting its Ukrainian face. According to M. Krasikov, the exhibition was held only with the support of a number of organizations, and first of all – the Trade Union Committee of Students of NTU “KhPI” and its chairman Andriy Olehovych Nagorny. Also, sincere words of gratitude are expressed by the project manager of the Scientific and Technical Library (including the director Larysa Petrovna Semenenko and the head of the mass department Lydia Petrovna Bondarenko). By the way, the library is hosting the third exhibition of the museum “Slobozhanski Treasures” and in general promotes educational work in the field of local lore.
