History of the Institute

The history of each institute is the history of its departments, which combine scientific schools, the specifics of educational work, student activity. The source of the Institute of Computer Science was the Department of Automatic Traffic Control. The department was opened in 1964 by prof. Aregom Dabagyan. Later, new divisions were formed on the basis of this department.

The Department of Automatic Traffic Control has trained more than 120 candidates and doctors of sciences. Among them, leading specialists of NTU “KhPI” Yu.T. Kostenko, V.Ya. Zaruba, OS Mazmanishvili, MD Godlevsky, LM Любчик, В.П. Severin, L.G. Ruskin et al.

In 1982, the Department of Technical Cybernetics (later, the Department of Systems Analysis and Information and Analytical Technologies) was established and the Department of Automated Control Systems was established (later, the Department of Software Engineering and Intellectual Control Technologies).

In 2000, the Department of Strategic Management was opened, and in 2002, the Department of Computer Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling (later, the Department of Computer Mathematics and Data Analysis). The Department of Strategic Management was headed by Dr. Tech. Sciences Igor Kononenko. Together with him, the first members of the department included candidates of technical sciences. Sciences VG Борисов, М.П. Grinchenko and others. The Department of Computer Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling was headed by Dr. tech. Sciences L.M. Любчиком. The staff of the department were prof. O.L. Pirotti, N.M. Yasnytska, O.B. Ahiezer, YI Hare.

Optimization of NTU “KhPI” in 2018 allowed to join the Department of Informatics and Intellectual Property, founded in 1999. The establishment of the department was based on many years of experience in training specialists in the field of intellectual property at NTU “KhPI”. The department was headed by prof. MM Soloshchuk. Associate professors OS worked with him. Derevyanko and OG Starusev, MS Kosilo, OS Somkhieva.

Currently, the teaching staff of the institute includes 17 doctors and more than 60 candidates of science. About 2,500 students study at the institute.

The principles of educational work at the institute correspond to the tasks set by one or another department. Thus, at the Department of Software Engineering and Intellectual Control Technologies, students’ study in such specialties as software engineering, computer science, information systems and technology. From the beginning, the training of specialists at each department was original. Thus, the Department of Automatic Traffic Control A. Dabagyan for the first time in the country introduced the work of students with computers from the first semester. Developing these glorious traditions, at the Department of Software Engineering and Information Technology Management, which since 1990 is headed by Dr. Sc., Prof. M.D. Godlewski, since the first half of the 2000s, students have been trained in English. The training of masters takes place on a dual basis, combining theoretical training and practical work, which reduces the period of adaptation of the graduate in the labor market.

The educational concept of the Department of Systems Analysis and Information and Analytical Technologies provides a departure from the training of specialized specialists in favor of broad integration of scientific fields. Since 1996, the department is headed by Prof., Ph.D. Kutsenko OS Combined with computer training, the approach has led to the discovery of specialties such as applied mathematics, information systems in management, systems analysis and management, computer science, social informatics, publishing and printing. Since 2016, the department conducts training in computer science, systems analysis, publishing and printing. High professionalism of teachers of the department (professors Bezmenova MI, Kashcheeva LB, associate professors Kovalenko SV, Marchenko II, etc.) allowed the department since 2005 to be the base for the second stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad in specialty “Computer Science” (hereinafter “Computer Science”). Students of the department were multiple winners and prize-winners of various competitions.

Specialists in project management and project management have been graduating from the Department of Strategic Management since 2003. Since 2016, the department has been training in computer science and specializing in project management in the field of information technology. During the whole period the department trained about 700 bachelors, specialists and masters. Teachers and students of the Department of Strategic Management take an active part in competitions of business plans of entrepreneurial activity at the regional and state level.

The Department of Computer Mathematics and Data Analysis provides general and special mathematical training for students. The opening of the specialty of applied mathematics at the department made it the first graduating mathematical department of the university. The concept of training specialists of the department combines methods of applied mathematics and skills of software development. New courses are being developed – in mathematical modeling, control theory, decision theory. Actuarial and financial mathematics became a new specialization, the development of which was supervised by associate professor AD Mats. Students of the department became three finalists of the World Programming Championship International Collegiate Programming Contest ACM-ICPC.

The Department of Informatics and Intellectual Property prepares students according to the concept of integrated training at the intersection of branches of knowledge and human life. Graduates of the department receive an integrated qualification of systems engineer-analyst, specialist in intellectual property. Consolidated information and intellectual property in software and computer engineering are other specializations that students study at the department. During its work, the department has trained about 600 students. Graduates of the department have the opportunity to continue their studies as PhD students and get jobs in the information technology industry. Among the graduates who have made a successful career are Anna Ryabokon, Oleksiy Kulagin, Mykhailo Brodsky, Yulia Mishenova, and Andriy Maryn.
